Alice Ferguson Foundation

Alice Ferguson Foundation Connecting more than half a million students and families to the wonders of nature since 1954.

The Alice Ferguson Foundation operates three core programs:

Each year, thousands of children from the Washington, DC metropolitan area experience environmental and agricultural hands-on learning through field studies at the Foundation's 330-acre Hard Bargain Farm. As 45% of these students are from underserved, at-risk communities, this is often their first nature experience. This initial encounte

r with nature profoundly affects students as well as the impact they can have on our environment and natural resources. "Green shock" is the astonished look on a child's face when he or she touches a real live cow or chicken for the first time. Within hours, that look softens into appreciation, wonder, and excitement! In partnership with the National Park Service and area schools, our Bridging The Watershed program provides personally meaningful, educational experiences that connect students to their role in the natural and cultural world. Each year, thousands of students from the Washington, DC region visit local national parks with their science classes as part of this program. These trips provide an authentic experience for students that allow them to take measurements and make field observations-just like a scientist. Since 1989, more than 90,000 volunteers have teamed with 400 partner organizations to haul more than 3 million tons of trash from the watershed during the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. The success of the Cleanup led to the creation of the Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative in 2005. The Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative focuses on trash disposal and provides a forum for active citizenship-catalyzing a diverse network of citizens, businesses, and elected officials to achieve the Initiative's objectives.

Can you believe 2020 was three years ago? Nope, neither can we! 🤯

During that unprecedented time, our Farm Manager and resident Bird Enthusiast, Bill Townsend, was (& still is) spending most of his time outside in nature and observing all the birds he could.

On this , we're looking back at Bill's "Birding on the Boardwalk" blog. Check it out: fergusonfoundation.org/news-stories/birding-on-the-birdwalk/

Last but certainly not least on our Best of 2022 moments is the return of Charles County Public Schools third-graders to Hard Bargain Farm! Students spend the day observing the wetlands through binoculars, searching for worms in the soil, taking a nature hike and MUCH MORE.

We are counting the days until the rest of the third-grade classes visit us this spring!

Today's Best of 2022 moment is from our Celebrate Science day with students from Kenmoor Middle School. Through hands-on activities like the trash timeline or using renewable energy devices, students learned about sustainability and the impact trash has on our environment.

We are looking forward to more days to Celebrate Science in 2023. We'll be announcing details for teachers soon!

As we wrap up this year, we are excited to share with you the impact we made through our environmental education programs, cleanups, and community events. It is because of your generous support that makes our work possible, and we are incredibly grateful.

With your help, we were able to...
- Serve 6,487 students through our environmental education programs
- Host 430 children and community members through summer camps and onsite weekend events
- Deliver professional development workshops to 193 teachers
- Reach 1,000+ community members through our Potomac River Watershed Cleanup initiative
- Cut the ribbon to unveil the brand new Shirley and Frank Nicolai Education Pavilion!

In the new year, we look forward to expanding our environmental education programming, including a return to overnight stays and an expansion of our summer camp program. But we can't do it alone. With five days left in 2022, we're looking back at our "Best of" moments from the year (in no particular order). First up, the 34th Annual Potomac Cleanup, held this past April.

Many thanks to our site leaders and volunteers throughout the watershed who help us keep our waterways and communities clean and safe.

Today, we celebrate the birthday of our namesake, Alice L.L. Ferguson. If it weren't for her purchase of Hard Bargain Farm 100 YEARS AGO, our Foundation wouldn't be what it is today. Our beautiful property is filled with her creative touches as we welcome children and the community to discover nature, the arts, and the cultural heritage of Southern Maryland.

What a year it has been! The generous support from our donors and friends has allowed us to continue to educate 10,000 students from Maryland, Virginia, and DC about sustainability, their environment and local watershed. It has allowed us to train over 100 teachers in environmental education practices. And it strengthened our efforts to pick up thousands of pounds of trash from the Potomac River with the help of 1,000 volunteers.

Your contributions help piece together the funding puzzle that enables us to bring more life-changing experiences in nature to all children. Each gift of $60 or more, earns you an entry in a giveaway to win a custom puzzle featuring art from Alice Ferguson herself, as pictured below. Complete the puzzle and donate today to help connect even more children to our environmental education programs.

Did you know the macroinvertebrates found in our local streams and rivers can tell you a lot about the waterway's health?

During our Water Canaries module, students collect macroinvertebrates from streams with nets to classify and identify them. By using macroinvertebrates as water quality indicators, students gain firsthand knowledge of how to determine stream health. With this knowledge, students can further investigate issues associated with water quality and pursue service projects like joining a local stream monitoring group to examine the health of streams in their own community.

The young explorers featured in these photos are from Green Acres School during their field trip last spring.

Introducing our turkey, Lady Gobbles of Hard Bargain Farm! 🤩

The original name submission was Sir Gobbles of Hard Bargain Farm III, but we recently learned that our turkey is a female so Lady Gobbles it is.

Thanks for helping us choose the name of our new farm friend. And thank you again for our classes from Mount Daniel School and St. Raphael School, Rockville, MD for submitting name suggestions. The winning name suggestion came from Ms. Kelly's 7th Grade class!

The mission of the Foundation is to “connect people to the natural world, sustainable agricultural practices, and the cultural heritage of their local watershed through education, stewardship, and advocacy”. They take care of a portion of Piscataway Park called Hard Bargain Farm. You can visit the staff of the Alice Ferguson Foundation at the farm by signing up for one of their fun events, like milking cows, learning how to adopt a stream, or helping to clean up Piscataway Park.

Come out on September 25th, National Public Lands Day, to help the Alice Ferguson Foundation pick up trash along our shoreline. Help us give a big thank you to the staff of the Foundation and all that they do for our park and its visitors.
