I wanted to make a post about calf scours. In many other calf raising groups I see people post asking questions about scours and they get a lot of comments that don't truly help them.

First and foremost the best way to treat any calf that is scouring is by keeping them warm, dry, and hydrated. There are many other things involved but these are the three basic musts.

You can use an antibiotic but keep in mind most scours are viral so an antibiotic is only helping by preventing secondary infections. An antibiotic will not kill a virus. A gut soothing product like Kaopectate is also very beneficial to keep the calf feeling good and hopefully keep them eating milk. Electrolytes should be offered a minimum of 2x a day in a scour event but never take the calf off milk. They need the nutrients in the milk now more than ever as their body is fighting off whatever caused the scour. Keep fresh clean water infront of the calf at all times. Make sure their bedding is deep, dry, and in cold weather a calf coat is a must.

The first question anyone should ask in a scour event is how old is the calf. Most scours can be diagnosed just on age. The second question should be whats the calfs temp. The temp will tell if the calf is truely sick or if maybe something else caused the loose stool like to much milk or not enough milk. Stressing a calf by moving it, changing milk or feed, or cold/hot weather is usually when a scour will show so its very common to buy a calf, bring it home and in the next day or 2 the calf begins to scour.

The best advice I ever received when it comes to calf scours is "Judge the calf, don't focus so much on the scour". This advice doesn't mean don't be on the lookout for your calf scouring but rather look at the whole calf. Droopy ears, cold ears. Sunken eyes, lethargic, slow to get up, snotty nose. These symptoms tell you when the calf needs help. One semi loose stool doesn't mean your calf is dying and you need to give the calf every antibiotic under the sun.

With all this being said, take all advice you get off Facebook with a grain of salt. Talk to your vet first. Most vets will give you advice over the phone. Just make sure to repay the favor by buying some product from them.

This post is just my 2 cents. There are a million ways to treat scours and a lot of them work. Feel free to post any tips or tricks you have learned about scours below in the comments.
