The mission of Agriculture in the Classroom is to increase agricultural literacy through K-12 education. Through creative lessons, hands-on projects, and programs that use technology, students can learn about agriculture's role in Iowa's history, where our food comes from, conservation, and how technology continues to impact agriculture in our state. Resources available through Dallas County Farm
Bureau:
-Classroom programs. Dallas County Ag in the Classroom can bring real-world applications to your curriculum by helping to find guest speakers, or by teaching hands-on lessons that tie to Iowa Core Standards.
-FarmChat. Bring the farm to your classroom through a FarmChat program. Your students can talk to a farmer or agribusiness professional live and watch as they harvest corn, plant soybeans, feed livestock, or tour a business. The curriculum connections are endless!
-Events & outreach opportunities. Let Dallas County Ag in the Classroom have a presence at your school by inviting us to attend a teachers' meeting, STEM event, career fair, or any activity in which we can share agriculture-related information. We would be happy to introduce Ag in the Classroom, promote funding opportunities, or provide information on a specific agriculture topic or issue.
-Special projects. Dallas County Ag in the Classroom can work with your school to design field trips, grow crops, form partnerships with local agribusinesses, or design an agriculture theme-year at your school.
-Agriculture information and resources. Contact us if you are looking for resources, need a lesson for a particular topic/subject, or have a question about agriculture. We can also provide samples of corn, soybeans, and other agriculture products for your students to investigate. If you are interested in learning more about how you can incorporate agriculture into your classroom please feel free to contact us!

Bring some cheer to your day by watching the chicks, who are now 6-7 days old! Can you see the grown-up feathers starting to appear at the ends of their wings? They are getting bigger every day!
We had a technical hiccup last night and the streaming stopped. So sorry about that! Two of Mr. Crow's class chicks hatched during the night. The egg in the front center has pipped and will be hatching sometime today! We'll livestream for awhile and see if we can catch it!
Can you see the little hole in the closest egg?! It's day 20, and the eggs will be hatching soon. One already started pipping tonight! What is pipping, you ask? Pipping is when the chick begins to break through the inner membrane and the shell. Soon you'll be able to see a small hole with the chick's tiny egg-tooth pointing through! Some chicks fully hatch within an hour of pipping, but others can take up to 24 hours with many periods of rest. So don't worry if they are taking awhile. It's a long and natural process. When the chicks emerge from their egg, they will be wet and pretty clumsy. They stay in the incubator until they are completely dry and fluffy. Once that happens, we will move the chicks to their new home.
It's day 19! Watch as chicken eggs are incubated until day 21 when they hatch! Brought to you by Story and Polk County Agriculture in the Classroom programs. We will livestream for a little while each night until they begin hatching. Then we will livestream and post videos more often. The livestreams will be posted on our page for you to view anytime.
Curious about what's going on inside the eggs we're incubating? Check out this lesson giving you all the details! Sources referenced in the lesson: American Egg Board - https://www.aeb.org/eggs-in-schools/classroom and National Ag in the Classroom egg lessons - https://www.agclassroom.org/teacher/matrix/search_result.cfm Be sure to check back with us every Monday through Thursday for a new lesson on an ag topic given by a Polk, Story, or Boone County Ag in the Classroom educator. Every lesson will provide you with great information and many will include fun, easy activities you can complete at home with your kids or students via distance learning.
