The tillage conundrum

To till or not to till? That question weighs heavy on growers’ minds each spring before planting season. Nevertheless, it’s important to approach tillage by understanding how it affects overall soil health and fertility, in addition to disease, w**d and insect pressure. Learn more in Stine Weekly.

"The biggest challenge we had was getting a variety that was going to yield for us in a maturity date that was going to work and being able to dry it down and get test weight.” — Matt Leavitt, grower

In our latest episode of the , Myron Stine continues his Yield+ Corn Tour to visit Minot, North Dakota, grower Matt Leavitt of Leavitt Farms. Matt and his family work hand in hand to achieve top-end yield through unique super management techniques. These techniques include a custom-built grain handling system for drydown, a lot of sulfur and a comprehensive fertility strategy, and hybrids that produce solid, season-long vigor — something that is key in his area where cold soil temps are the norm. 2023 loading: A year to try something new

“My advice to growers is, don’t get stuck in the past,” says Bill Kessinger, Stine technical agronomist. “There are so many great opportunities to expand your perception — attend a CCA or university extension meeting to learn something new or visit with your local fertilizer or seed expert to hear how other growers in your area are finding success. Once you’ve reflected and identified a few areas where you think your operation could improve, map out a plan for how you can implement those changes."

Kessinger provides more tips for the 2023 season in our latest edition of Stine Weekly. Read it here.

There is no one way to farm. What works and makes one grower successful might not work for another. You can easily find reasons why something will not work, but it is hard to find ways to truly improve your operation. Unfortunately, most of the ways to improve your operation will involve risk and ...

Seed genetics, supply withstand tough 2022 conditions

There’s no question that 2022 was a tough year for growers, especially as many in the Midwest dealt with drought. Fortunately, crops today are becoming more tolerant to stress. Plan ahead for tar spot

Tar spot was problematic throughout the Midwest this year and continues to spread. Typically, the fungal disease affects corn later in the season during the critical grain fill stage, and unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done after it’s detected. That said, there are some effective strategies we can plan for now as we gear up for the 2023 season. Learn more in Stine Weekly.

As reported in August, tar spot was problematic throughout the Midwest this year and continues to spread. The disease is caused by the fungus Phyllachora maydis and can be detrimental to yields as it causes leaf deterioration, poor grain fill, compromised stalks and even plant death. In fact, expert...

This should also include areas where you detect insect and soybean diseases.”
