Why don't we sell our eggs off the homestead? Because of this right here. This is a chicken egg next to one of our heritage Silver Appleyard duck eggs to showcase the color difference (though these pictures don't do it justice).
This egg is a mossy green color with a bloom so thick it looks grey. Bloom is the natural covering every egg starts out with when it's first laid. Bloom is what protects eggs from easily rotting during periods such as incubation and it is what stabilizes them for storing on your kitchen counter. Bloom is what you're getting when you get farm fresh chicken or duck eggs from us.
Eggs cannot legally be sold at locations other than where they have been laid unless they have been washed with a bleach solution and are then refrigerated just like the eggs you buy in the store....eggs which can be well over a month old by the time you see them in your grocery store refrigerated section. This is unsatisfactory. Our eggs are truly FARM FRESH and retain their natural bloom. This is truly a farm-to- consumer and farm-to table product.
So, while limiting egg sales to our homestead location may cost us sales, it preserves the integrity of our goal, which is to provide our customers with farm-fresh chicken and duck eggs with blooms intact.
