All aboard! 🚂

Our second stop with the Rio Grande Chapter TCA and you made Ocean Desert feel right at home.

Thank you to the organizers for having us back, the collectors who shared their miniature worlds, and everyone who stopped by for breakfast and a conversation. Chris and I loved getting to spend part of our Saturday with you.

There’s something special about being in a room full of people who love what they do. From the detailed train displays and tables of collectibles to the raffle, there was plenty to explore, and plenty of reasons to stay a little longer.

We’re already looking forward to the next one! Mark December 12 on your calendar, and keep an eye out here. We’ve got more moments from this visit to share as we count down to the next whistle.

Last week brought us to SRM Elementary for Balloons Aloft. This Saturday, we’re heading to the United game! We’re excited to keep meeting Albuquerque in new places.

Over the past year, Ocean Desert has been showing up in ways that matter. Becoming part of the places we gather, sending out little wonders in the form of tacos, nachos, and Kraken fries.

And Chef Chris Midyette has been using those little wonders to take Ocean Desert places.

Into competitions, leading an award-winning team. And into conversations about some of Albuquerque’s best specialty tacos.

Earlier this year, he led Ocean’s 5 to Judges choice gold at Behind the Mask for both entree and desert. And there's more recognition we're excited to share with you soon. 😉 It’s exciting to see the food he’s put so much work into getting that recognition.

But there’s something else worth celebrating about our chef: the way he highlights and uplifts the people and places around him.

He makes room for others to contribute, trusts them with opportunities to grow, and helps their creativity become part of what Ocean Desert is becoming. We get to celebrate the food and the people helping bring it to life.

So today, we’re turning that spotlight toward him.

Lavender & Moonlight - Halloween Edition

Free botanical lore presentation begins at 7 PM

We’re bringing Ocean Desert LLC, ♡diffwitches♡, and Wickedly Cunning together for an evening of tacos, botanical lore, tarot, and a little seasonal magic.

First, a heartfelt thank-you to Samantha for introducing us to Rowan. Connections like this are how an idea becomes an evening we get to share with our community.

Rowan is the person behind Wickedly Cunning, his pop-up apothecary, and brings expertise in botanicals.
He'll be walking everyone through the history and uses for lavender. We’re honored to welcome him and share his knowledge with the curious souls who gather at Differential .

At 7 PM, he’ll lead a free presentation exploring lavender’s history, folklore, and spookier stories. And while he tells the story, we’ll bring lavender to the plate.

🌮 Meet Lavender Tide, our special taco for the evening: (available all night while supplies last)
Seared shrimp glazed with lavender-infused honey and bright lemon, layered with crunchy cabbage slaw, pickled red onion, and a light swipe of poblano crema on a warm corn tortilla. Floral, savory, sweet, and bright, all coming together in one bite.

🍸 Rosa will be working her own magic behind the bar, crafting a special lavender cocktail to pair with the tacos and carry the evening’s flavor from your plate into your glass.

🔮 After the lesson, Rowan will offer tarot readings for $20. Readings are optional, so you’re welcome to come for the lore, enjoy the pairing, and spend some time with fellow curious souls.

Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming! 🔑🌊

For years, I cooked behind big corporate lines, sending out plate after plate without ever seeing the smiles on the other side.

I worked my way up to sous chef. Along the way, I chose sobriety, learned to protect my boundaries, and eventually stepped away from kitchens altogether.

Working at Walmart, I found myself crying in the aisles, wondering how I’d ended up there. I started reaching out to chefs, asking why they cooked and what kept them going. I was trying to find my own answer.

One of those chefs was Chris.

He told me about Ocean Desert, but I didn’t feel ready. So I returned to what I knew. The same kitchen that told me to come back with more experience in 2011 hired me as a supervisor in 2024. Same chef, too. 😂

That eventually led me to help open Ex Novo. Meanwhile, Chris saw my Facebook content and invited me to dinner. He wanted me to help tell Ocean Desert’s story.

That invitation became paid content work. Then two days a week on the truck.

I learned his systems, watched him cook, and started making small adjustments to help things flow. We got to know each other through the work, understanding why he did things his way, and why I did things mine.

Somewhere along the way, we built one of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had.

Chris has held me together in moments when I couldn’t hold myself together. He’s trusted me to help bring his vision to life and share it with the city. And through that work and friendship, he’s helped me see my own value.

Now, he’s trusted me with the keys.

To me, those keys represent personal trust on a public level. His confidence that I can consistently recreate his dishes and give you the true Ocean Desert experience.

I know what that responsibility means, and I’m proud to carry it.

All those years sending plates out, wondering what happened on the other side, and now I get to meet you, feed you, and see the joy for myself.

Chris, thank you for trusting me. Albuquerque, I’m excited to serve you.
