Did you know Rapides Parish got its name from the old rapids in the Red River near Alexandria and Pineville?

The word โ€œRapidesโ€ comes from the French word for โ€œrapids.โ€ Louisianaโ€™s official state website says the parish name is derived from the French word rapides, meaning โ€œrapids.โ€

Those rapids were caused by a natural limestone/sandstone ledge that crossed the Red River near present-day Alexandria and Pineville. The Rapides Parish Police Jury explains that the parish was named after an old trading post located at those rapids, and that a small French settlement called Poste Du Rapides was established in 1723.

So before our area was known the way we know it today, it was identified by that important river crossing โ€” the rapids. They shaped travel, trade, settlement, and eventually gave our parish its name.

Then in 1864, during the Civil Warโ€™s Red River Campaign, those same low-water rapids became a major problem for Union gunboats near Alexandria. Lt. Col. Joseph Bailey designed and built Baileyโ€™s Dam to raise the river level and help the fleet escape downstream.

Thatโ€™s a piece of Central Louisiana history worth remembering!

The first mule-drawn streetcar line opened in 1891, electric streetcars arrived around 1905โ€“1906, and the streetcar era came to an end on December 18, 1926, when buses took over the next day.
