Farmworkers

Farmworkers

Always resilient, ever essential, U.S. farmworkers are the heart of the food supply. The flexibility and dedication these workers continue to bring to the job makes the reliable supply of fresh fruits and vegetables possible. Support growers who invest in these by shopping at Costco or Whole Foods Market.

The holiday season is here! 🎁 ✨🎄 I’ve heard that my cookbook, Love Real Food, makes a terrific gift. If you have purchased the book for yourself and your friends and family, thank you so much for your support. If you don’t have a copy yet, add it to your Christmas list! One of my favorite gifts I’ve received over the years was a cookbook with a set of measuring spoons. It was a cute and thoughtful gift.✨✨

As you celebrate Thanksgiving, remember that the food on your table is provided by the labor of farmworkers and harvested on stolen land. During your gatherings, reflect on the source of your food and join us in the fight for farmworker justice.

Aquaculture is an inevitable part of the protein solution for the future- our focus should be on making it more sustainable and equitable.

Did you know over half of the seafood we eat today is farmed? In fact, some popular types of seafood, including tilapia and catfish, are almost exclusively farmed. In the next decade, the majority of fish we eat will be farm-raised, not wild.

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic plants. When done correctly, aquaculture can be sustainable as farmers control factors such as feed, water quality and waste. Sustainable aquaculture farms assess the impacts of individual farms and the cumulative impacts of multiple farms at the local or regional scale.

Our ocean can’t keep up with providing wild fish to our growing global population, and farmed seafood is helping to relieve that pressure. By adopting environmentally responsible farming methods we can create an aquaculture industry that will serve future generations and protect the planet.

It’s fascinating how many words in modern English are borrowed from indigenous languages of the Americas.

Indigenous loanwords name much that is unique to Turtle Island - both in human history and in natural history. They act as a reminder, conscious and subliminal, of the original peoples and languages of this land. More than four centuries of communication and miscommunication may be traced in the chronicle of these words.

Highly recommend contributing to FLOC if you have any means to do so. Baldemar Velásquez is a living legend and a farmworker justice advocate on par with Cesar Chavez, and one of my personal heroes.

Can you imagine Italy without tomatoes? Belgium without chocolate? Anishinaabewaki without smallpox? Lakȟóta Makȟóčhe with bison instead of cows? The Columbian Exchange created the modern cultures of Europe and disrupted the traditional lifeways of Turtle Island. It was a tool for colonial domination, not 'trade.'

“Whenever summer arrives, with its intense heat waves, everyone remembers that there are millions of agriculture workers who, no matter the temperature or the circumstances, pick and process the products that feed this country. And they do it in the middle of intense heat, cold, and the pandemic, under precarious working conditions, housing, salaries, and benefits.”

“And although bills come and go, it still seems that nothing is done to grant justice to these essential workers who guarantee nothing less than the continuation of our food supply.”

This geographical map is a perfect example of how globalized our food system has become.

Transporting a product for tens of thousands of kilometers means enormously increasing its impact on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions, and then packing it in plastic is even more absurd.

Ending wage theft in agriculture starts with simple things like required time clocks and fair bucket-filling standards. But the Fair Food Program goes further: through both the Fair Food Premium which has put $36M into farmworkers’ pockets, and the 24/7 complaint mechanism that has helped workers recover nearly $500,000 in owed wages. In the past 10 years, the Fair Food Program has proven that farmworker poverty is not inevitable — it just requires consciousness and commitment.

From Farm Gate to Restaurant Plate: How a Team of Researchers is Tracking the Cost of Your Food

The journey food takes from a farm to your plate (or glass) is often long and winding. That pint of blueberries you bought at the grocery store may come from Chile or Mexico. The coffee beans and tea leaves you rely on for a morning boost of caffeine probably weren’t grown in your backyard. Even i...
