Corn silage is done, but not without incident! 😅
Did You Know ⁉️
🌽 Corn Silage: The harvest machine is called a Chopper, and it takes nearly 100% of the plant (stalk, leaves, cob, kernels). Corn grown for silage gets harvested earlier in the harvest season as it is best chopped green, and at about 65–70% moisture. This silage is then feed primarily for dairy and beef cattle!
🌽 Corn Grain: The harvest machine for corn grain is called a Combine! The combine harvests only the kernels at around 13–15% moisture. Combining happens late in the harvest season as the stalk turns much drier and yellow. The combine will leave stalks, leaves, and husks out in the field. Grain is used for concentrated feed or in the industrial markets.
🚜 If you happen to cross paths with one of these rigs while you’re on the road, please be patient, cautious, and maybe give that farmer a wave! The only finger we want to see is a thumb, please 👍🏼
