1 black and white roo
1 blue, copper, and white roo, who is my keeper roo so far.

2 white pullets
3 brown pullets
1 mottled/splash pullet

It is very dangerous to pick a favorite chicken. And yet I have. This little pullet (I hope) is so sweet and cute! My favorite rooster is the blue and white in the second photo; he’s getting some copper coloring in, and promises to be just beautiful. Here’s hoping they mature nicely!

Chicken Math

The number of chicks you should get is 5x the number of new laying hens you hope to get out of the batch, because:

1) Half of them will be roosters (this can be reduced to 3x if you are buying females only, and 2x if it is a color-linked breed);

2) You will lose some chicks along the way;

3) Some hens may not end up being good breed representatives or may not lay well;

4) At least one will end up with a behavioral issue that end with her in a pot, such as eating eggs, attacking small children, bullying other chickens, or engaging in tax fraud;

5) By the time they are adults you will be thinking “Man I should have gotten a couple more chicks, I could really use one more hen …”

Pictured: the 11 chicks that are just now big enough to go outside …

It’s time for every farmer’s favorite game, Hen or Rooster! There are 2 I am sure are roosters. There are 3 I am sure are hens. There are 4 that could go either way.

It’s summer up in the Rockies! What, nobody’s going broody yet?! How rude! About to introduce some new nest boxes, we’ll see if that changes anything!
