Rawlins Family Homestead

Rawlins Family Homestead Welcome to the Rawlins Family Homestead!

We moved to a small town in Michigan in 2019 where our dream of having a small goat farm began and would love for you to follow us on our journey to building a bountiful homestead.

We have challenges with the cold and snow now but our framers are on a steady pace getting the rest of the house done despite the cold. Not sure how they do it. We spent some time shoveling the snow out of the first floor so they could go strait to work Monday. Every morning I’m eager to see the progress of the previous day.

Another wall going up. The far left opening is the door from the garage to the mud room, middle window is above kitchen sink and the window to the right is where our nook for a table and chairs between the kitchen and living room.

Before and After. Framing starts tomorrow.

We spent the day moving dirt from the footers we dug one bucket at a time. Swept up the last of the garbage to get ready for framing out the house tomorrow.

My daughter had a pretty good sense of humor once the shock and grief from losing her belongings wore off. Here’s a short video she posted to TikTok capturing the aftermath of the fire and the water from the fire trucks that froze everything in place

Before our house was demolished we went through to salvage what we could. Especially mementos but I found this jar of dried basil I grew in my garden in the kitchen cabinet. I saved it. I miss having an herb garden. The perennial herbs I had were in landscaping along the house and destroyed. I’m looking forward to creating my edible landscaping around the new house. Growing an herb garden and harvesting cost next to nothing once you’ve planted them. You can have more than enough dried herbs for cooking throughout the year and even share with friends and family. I highly recommend doing this as it cuts down on the grocery bill

Adding the crushed gravel base for the garage this beautiful Thursday morning

Keith is busy leveling the area to get the concrete poured for the garage. It’s a great feeling to be able to be a part of our new home build.

This is the start of the new house! Footers are in and block being put in for new garage and around basement walls to make enough headroom for a bigger I-beam which will allow us to have less supporting posts. We should have the framing up soon! We are so excited for a fresh start and brand new house.

A big thank you to Wade Kudzia Kudzia Farms for doing an amazing job with the demolition of our house. We finally don’t have to look at our burnt and rotting house and can begin the rebuild. Can’t wait to be back in our new house and getting back to homestead life!

Summer seems to be speeding by so fast when getting through the process of rebuilding our house. We have been spending a lot of time at the property with our animals and keeping the dogs cool with kiddie pools which Oliver loves. We are looking forward to fall and the rebuild. Just when we thought we were gonna demo we had to stall for the mold remediation estimate in the basement. So looking forward to finally getting to demo next week

It’s a beautiful Memorial Day! We spent time with family and bought some vegetable plants and herbs for the garden. I decided to go ahead and plant my gardens this year since we need to be spending time with our animals and keeping up with yard work and landscaping. Tomorrow we till the garden to prep for planting. My oldest son Magnus has even set up the movie screen for outdoor movie nights with his friends.
