HE IS SAFE! OUR BRABANT GELDING IS COMING HOME TOMORROW!

We are so excited to share that our beautiful Brabant Draft gelding is officially safe and will be making his way to Big Hoof Foundation tomorrow!

Thanks to your generosity, support, and willingness to share our posts, this sweet boy now has a future filled with love, safety, and the peaceful retirement he deserves.

THANK YOU to everyone who donated, shared our fundraiser, and helped make this rescue possible! We truly could not do this without you.

While this boy’s future is now secure, there are still so many horses out there waiting for someone to give them a chance.

If you would like to help us continue rescuing horses in need and providing lifelong sanctuary care, please consider making a donation.

ANOTHER BRABANT DRAFT HORSE NEEDS OUR HELP!

We are working to rescue a beautiful Brabant gelding in his upper teens who deserves a safe place to retire. After years of working, it’s time for this big boy to enjoy a life of friends, forage, freedom, and peace.

This rescue is especially meaningful to us after recently losing Moe, another Brabant gelding who was only with us a short time. We couldn’t give Moe more time, but we can honor his memory by giving another horse a second chance.

AND TWO MULES ARE JOINING THIS RESCUE!

A miniature mule jenny and an almost completely blind mule also need a forever home. Thanks to an incredibly generous sponsor, the bail for BOTH mules is covered!

NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP TO SAVE THE BRABANT GELDING!

We are raising funds for his bail and transportation so he can spend the rest of his life in peace.

Every donation brings us closer to getting him home. If you can’t donate, please share!

🌾 FEED THE HERD — HELP US KEEP THE HAY COMING!

This is one of our biggest ongoing expenses, and it’s something we simply cannot go without.

We are currently feeding approximately 17 large round bales of hay every THREE DAYS!

At $140 per bale, that’s approximately $23,800 every 30 days just for hay!

And that doesn’t include specialized feed for our senior and special-needs horses, veterinary expenses, farrier care, or the countless other costs of running a lifetime sanctuary.

Every bale matters. Every donation matters. Every horse matters.

❤️ THREE FUNDRAISERS. THREE WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

You can purchase a raffle ticket, order a shirt, donate toward hay, or simply share this post with your friends and family.

Visit www.bighooffoundation.org to participate and help support our mission.

We know we ask for help often, but the reality is that caring for rescued horses doesn’t stop when the fundraising ends. These animals depend on us 365 days a year, and we depend on the generosity of people who believe their lives are worth saving.

Thank you for continuing to stand beside us, especially during the difficult days. Because of you, these horses have something they may never have known before safety, love, freedom, and a forever home.

Another Day on the Farm at Big Hoof Foundation

There is never really a slow day around here. With so many horses and donkeys depending on us, every day brings a long list of things that need to be done.

From feeding and watering to cleaning, checking on our special needs horses, administering medications, giving horses a much-needed bath, and making sure everyone is comfortable, the work never stops. And just when you think you have everything caught up, something else needs your attention.

Today included some bath time for a few of our horses! Some enjoy the extra attention and getting cleaned up, while others would probably prefer to stay covered in dirt. Either way, it’s all part of caring for this big herd.

But somewhere in the middle of all the chores, there are those little moments that remind us why we do this.

Watching an old draft horse peacefully grazing in the pasture. Seeing friendships between horses who once had uncertain futures. Getting a gentle nudge from someone looking for a little extra attention. Or watching a freshly bathed horse head straight for the dirt to roll!

These are the moments that make all the hard work worth it.

Most of the horses here have already spent years working, surviving neglect, or facing an uncertain future. Today, they don’t have to worry about any of that. They get to simply be horses.

And that’s exactly what we want for them.

Running a sanctuary isn’t easy. It’s physically exhausting, emotionally challenging, and incredibly expensive. But every single horse and donkey here deserves the care, dignity, and peace we promised them when we brought them home.

Friends. Forage. Freedom. For life.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission and helps us make days like today possible.

If you’d like to help us keep the hay coming, the feed buckets full, and our rescued herd cared for, please consider making a donation.

OCTOBER FEED THE HERD FUNDRAISER — HELP US KEEP THE HAY COMING!

Rescuing a horse saves a life. Feeding that horse every single day for the rest of its life is the promise we make.

October is here, and at Big Hoof Foundation, that means another month of making sure every horse and donkey in our care has the food, nutrition, and support they need.

Our sanctuary is home to more than 200 rescued horses and donkeys, many of whom came to us after years of hard work, neglect, abandonment, or facing slaughter. Some are seniors. Some have medical conditions. Others require specialized diets just to maintain a healthy weight.

But every single one of them deserves a full belly, a safe home, and a peaceful life.

And feeding a herd this size is no small undertaking.

Here's what it takes:

$160 purchases one large round bale of hay.

140 round bales are needed each month to help feed our herd.

$22,400 is what 140 bales cost at today's prices.

$4,000 every two weeks goes toward specialized feed for approximately 20 of our special-needs horses in the barn.

And those expenses don't include veterinary care, medications, farrier visits, or the many other necessities involved in providing lifelong sanctuary.

Our October Feed the Herd Fundraiser is about more than buying hay. It's about keeping a promise.

When we rescue a horse, we don't promise them a few good weeks or months. We promise them a lifetime of care, whether that means five years, five months, or just a few peaceful days.

We cannot fulfill that promise without people like you.

Will you help us feed the herd this October?

Whether you can give $10, $25, $50, $100, or sponsor an entire round bale for $160, every contribution helps us provide the daily care these animals depend on.

DONATE TODAY:

If donating isn't possible right now, please share this fundraiser. Every share helps us reach someone new who may be able to help.

From all of us at Big Hoof Foundation, thank you for standing beside these horses and donkeys and helping us give them the retirement they deserve.

Every horse. Every day. No exceptions.

The hardest part of rescue isn’t saving them. It’s loving them enough to keep going when your heart is breaking.

The last couple of weeks have taken a lot out of us.

We have faced heartbreaking losses, long days, sleepless nights, and moments when we have fought with everything we had to help a horse stand again only to eventually have to say goodbye.

But today, the rest of the herd still needs us.

They don’t know our hearts are hurting. They only know that morning has come and they are waiting for breakfast.

Feed buckets still have to be filled. Hay still has to go out. Water has to be checked. Medications have to be given. Our seniors and special-needs horses need their individual meals and care. More than 200 horses and donkeys are depending on us to keep the promise we made when they came through our gates.

So we keep going.

We keep going for the horses who worked their entire lives before being discarded.

For the ones who were unwanted.

For the ones who were neglected.

For the ones we pulled from kill pens when their futures were measured in days.

And for every horse and donkey here who deserves to know what it feels like to simply be safe.

We cannot promise them unlimited tomorrows. None of us can.

But we can promise that every tomorrow they have with us will be filled with food, care, dignity, kindness and love.

Friends. Forage. Freedom. For life.

If you have ever wondered whether your support truly matters—it does. Especially on days like these.

Every donation helps us continue putting feed in the buckets, hay in the pastures, medicine in the barn and veterinary care within reach when one of our horses needs us.

Please help us keep going for them.

Some days are simply harder than others.

There are days when the weight of everything feels a little heavier, when your heart is tired and you just need a place where the world can be quiet for a while.

For me, that place is with the horses.

Walking through the pasture, listening to them graze, feeling a soft nose against my shoulder, or simply standing beside them without needing to say a word has a way of making everything feel a little better.

Horses don’t ask you to explain. They don’t care what kind of day you’ve had. They just let you be there.

Sometimes the perfect way to spend a hard day is in muck boots, surrounded by horses, remembering to slow down and appreciate the simple things.

These horses may have come to us because they needed a safe place to heal, but I think sometimes they have a way of healing us, too.
