#DYK that a hen’s behavior and egg production can be impacted by the type of system they are in? Researchers set out to see how hens would react to either being placed in a multi-tier system or floor system. Hyline Brown laying hens were randomly divided into two groups and placed into either a multi-tier system or a floor system at a commercial farm. The behavior of the hens was recorded by the use of CCD (charge-coupled device) cameras and a digital video recorder. It was found that the hens placed in the multi-tier system had a dramatic change in behavior during the first 7 days. It was also found that egg production was higher in the multi-tier system and the eggs were less likely to be broken or dirty than of the hens were in a floor system. This shows that the multi-tier system was more efficient than the floor system in terms of production but, the hens will need at least 7 days to adapt to the multi-tier system.

The Egg Nutrition Center has sponsored a study to learn more about egg allergies among children. Researchers determined children that were not fed eggs by 12 months of age were most likely to develop an egg allergy by the age of 6. This research shows that eggs are an important first food for infants and toddlers.

#DYK the use of range among free range hens has an impact of layer performance? Researchers randomly selected 1,875 hens at 16 weeks of age and monitored "range use" placing them into one of three groups: “stayers” (20% of the hens spending the least amount of time on the range), “roamers” (20% of the hens that used the range more than stayers but less than rangers), and “rangers” (the remaining 60% of hens that spent the most time on the range). At 22 weeks it was observed that rangers had a higher laying performance than the stayers but, at 72 weeks the stayer’s laying performance rose immensely while the rangers had a slight decline in performance. These results show that the use of range can impact laying performance.

Just like us, temperature can affect a hen’s behavior. Researchers observed Lohmann Selected Leghorn hen’s roosting behavior when placed on perches at different temperatures. Hens with the warmer perches were more engaged and active. The hens with the cooler perches were less alert and not as energetic. The results of this study shows that perch temperature is an important factor when it comes to considering hen housing environments.

A hen’s diet is very important for proper growth and development.Researchers have studied the effects of adding enzymes and essential oils to free range hens. Hens were either fed a diet with no feed additives, a combination of enzymes, or a mixture of benzoic and essential oils. It was found that the pasture raised hens benefited the most off of the diet consisting of the multi-enzymes. The hens were significantly heavier in body weight, organ weight, and even egg weight.

#DYK elevated perches can improve hen welfare? In 2009 Lohmann Brown and Lohmann Selected Leghorn hens were studied to find their preference of perching height. The hens were granted access to resting areas with a height of either 15 cm or 60 cm. The hens were videotaped at night to record their behaviors. It was found that the hens preferred the higher resting perches (60cm) during the night. This shows that hens should be granted access to higher perching areas to improve their welfare.

Do you think hens care more about nest size or space when it comes to laying hen facilities? In 2014, researchers set out to find the answer. They studied Lohmann Selected Leghorn Lite laying hens that were housed in large or small furnished cages with either low or high space allowance to see the effects of nesting behaviors. The results of this study showed that nest size is of more importance to the laying hens than space allocation. These results can be taken into consideration when designing new laying hen facilities.

Can a change in resources influence range distribution and feather pecking? In 2017, researchers followed free-range laying hen flocks for two years to answer that very question. A study flock was provided a narrow shelter and resource package (containing a pecking block and wind chimes) to observe their effect on hen distribution all around the range and various feather pecking behaviors. Assessments based on welfare and behavior occurred multiple times throughout the duration of the study. The study results showed a decrease in gentle and severe feathering pecking, and an increase in shelter usage during the second year. These changes in hen behavior allowed for an improvement of range distribution. The study concluded that resource packages and shelters contribute to the improvement of the overall welfare of free-range hens.

#DYK that the gregarious (living in flocks or loosely organized communities) nature of laying hens may have a direct relation to their nesting behaviors? Hens were observed and placed into three groups based on their choice of an unoccupied or occupied nest: gregarious, intermediate, or solitary nests. The showed that the intermediate nesters (hens that chose both occupied and unoccupied nests equally) had an increase of pacing behaviors during the pre-laying period. During this study, the body weight, sociality, and dominance hierarchy was not affected by the gregarious nature. Further study is needed to evaluate the relationship between frustration and nesting behavior. #EggResearch #EggScience
