Maple Grove at Silver Creek

Maple Grove at Silver Creek We make and share the experience of making maple syrup in late winter. We will sell wine grapes and fresh hops to hobbyist wine makers and brewers.

Operating as usual

Well folks, I am sorry I haven't posted in quite sometime. I have been pre-occupied with coping with my parents home, fixing it up to sell which breaks my heart, but it has been too long and I can't keep up. Also, my best friend, my 3 yo grandson keeps me really busy and as you all know I serve in the Indiana Guard Reserve and my service always come first.

We are in the midst of making maple syrup with a 4 day cold snap in front of us which makes it difficult. It's good to get out and work hard in late winter. Should be a pretty good year.

We are selling the lot north of Andrews because we are not ready for a tasting bar, and if and when we are, we will jump off that bridge when we get there.

Lastly, I think in a year or two some of our grapes with produce, however a few varieties have been total losses.

I will be 63 yo this year with little desire of carrying on from our children, so I, and my sister Julie, will do the best we can with what we have planted and may just enjoy artesian wines and micro distilled spirits at Yella Dog Lake by the fire. Without Julie I would have thrown the towel in a long time ago. Love you Julie.

Stay tune I will try to post more often.

Trees are tapped but it's too cold for the sweet to run. Maybe after this cold snap.

I need to apologize to the people of Andrews, Huntington county and America. My flag management through the recent high winds was poor. I lost my US Flag, light and rigging on my property on US 24 and SR 105 due to high winds. I am extremely grateful and proud of whoever identified and corrected my failure. Those who picked up our flag and stored it in my shed, Thank You. You are patriots and I am in your debt. I will soon replace it all with stronger and better rigging and will properly retire our flag. My apologies and Thank you.

Well it has been a long time. We have been very busy here planting grapes, pruning and training grapes, mowing, chasing off deer, and trapping beetles. A big thanks to Julie Schoeff and Karen VanCurren. We have one grape vine doing what we want, now to get 3999 to follow suit.

To all who have made requests for Maple Grove at Silver Creek home made maple syrup, I believe we will be able to fulfill your requests. We have made just under 10 gallon and are hopeful for another 3 weeks. After the making of syrup is finished I will focus on shipping and delivering. Who would of thought we would ship almost across the entire country. This is a hobby. If it were a Business we would be broke, but I enjoy it. We have another 500 grape vines coming April 1 so no rest here. We will get those planted as soon as we can and then on to training and pruning the previously planted vines. Then mowing and a lot of it. Enjoy your spring.

Thank you all for your great response. I will plan a weekend to meet and share syrup at the end of the month. Unfortunately I have IGR duty and training for the next few weekends, and I will always put my service first.

Working the sugar camp at Maple Grove at Silver Creek with the flu is not for the meek. I had big plans this year but we have been sick here for going on two weeks, so I am cutting back my expectations a little. We have about 1/2 of the trees tapped. It would have been a third of what we wanted. I guess I'm getting old. We will keep you posted.

Well, some days I feel like a one man, forester, timber cutter, sawyer and furniture maker. Hopefully, with a little help from my friends, we will turn all of this black walnut into a tasting bar, wine racks and furniture. Not for a while though, it's time to get ready and make maple syrup. If it is a good enough year, I might try maple wine. What do you think?

Well we here at Maple Grove at Silver Creek Vineyards have taken the next step. We have made an offer to procure land to someday, build a winery/store tasting room. The offer has been tentatively accepted. We will know more in a week or two, but the whole thing is getting real. We will keep you posted on our progress.

Wow, I spent the day pruning and staking grape vines. I must say, it's good hard work but I really enjoy it. Hopefully we will someday see and taste the fruits of our labor. Most vines are beginning to bud. As the year progresses I will keep you informed. It was, however another poor syrup season, I was able to take care of my long term customers but we were unable to offer any syrup to new customers, again for the third year. If this continues I will need to give it up and focus on the vineyard. I have no intentions at this point of quitting the syrup but I'm not a pup anymore and cutting, spitting and stacking firewood is not for old codgers. My wife loves the syrup and as long as I am alive, I will make sure she has some. I don't plan on planting any more grapes this year, just take care of what we have. If things look good we will increase the vineyard next year. As thing move along, I will be in need of help, young or old, green card or not, If you know of good help, hard work, self motivated, low pay but share in the growth, send them my way. Lastly, I ask you remember those who preserve our freedom, military and public service, be a patriot, work hard to move forward and God bless America.

Well here is a little update at Maple Grove at Silver Creek. It has been a very rough year again for maple syrup. I tapped trees several weeks ago and have had little to no cooperation from mother nature. So, with the warm weather, I went out and emptied all my buckets and cleaned all my equipment only to gather enough sweet to make 1 gallon of low grade syrup. Well, I went out today and checked the sweet run and WTH the buckets are filling up. I may be able to make some syrup yet.

The grapes are looking good. We had a rough year with putting in the trellis, the truck ran over and broke off 30% of our vines. I am hopeful we can recover in a couple of years. The bright side is, with a little luck we will be expanding into a winery and organic goat cheese. We will see how we fair at the auction tomorrow, as always I am optimistic. I love working outdoors and wish I could convince my children to do the same. Peace be with you and don't tread on me. Oh by the way next to my family, I love my country.

Well some of our work is paying off, some places are beginning to look like a vineyard. I had a change in plans this week. I was cutting honey locust trees, sawing post for our trellis on the sawmill, digging post holes, setting post and stringing wire. Since this appears more than this old man can do, We have decided to hire most of it done. Planning on completion in the next few months. Then continue pruning and training.

For some reason FB will not allow me to access my Maple Grove at Silver Creek FB page so I will post from my personal account. We at Maple Grove at Silver Creek Vineyards will have wine grapes for sale for wineries and artesian wine makers starting in late August. We may even be able to provide must (pressed grapes). We should have red, white and grey grape with the specific varieties specified at a later date. If you are interested please let me know on either FB account. Thanks, Mitch
