It’s been a while, but Drink & a Movie Night is back. 🍸🎬

Tonight’s pairing: Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead (1999) with a Nick’s Own Cocktail straight from the Savoy Cocktail Book (1930).

Bringing Out the Dead stars Nicolas Cage as a burned-out NYC paramedic spiraling through 48 hours of exhaustion, guilt, and strange encounters on the midnight streets. With Patricia Arquette, John Goodman, Ving Rhames, and Tom Sizemore rounding out the cast, this haunting drama was Scorsese’s way of “exorcising” years of watching the struggles of paramedics and the forgotten souls of the city.

Though it flopped at the box office, critics like Roger Ebert praised it as deeply powerful—reminding us that paramedics are “heroes, and saints they’re saints.”

The drink of the night, Nick’s Own, is a classic shaken cocktail featured in the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book a piece of history itself, published right in the middle of Prohibition alongside many other cocktails named after real people.

Movies, cocktails, and a little history cheers to keeping the tradition alive. 🥂

I’m looking for more drinks to make and post to the page. If you’ve got any favorites or want to see something cool made then share the drink, a link, or even the recipe! It’s a long weekend for us here at the tavern and hopefully you as well. So post up some ideas and I’ll do my best to recreate it!

Please note, the “Tavern” is located in a state that controls liquor sales so availability will be limited to Saturday sales. Other ingredients can be readily sourced though so bring on your recommendations!

The Juliet and Romeo

Tonight’s drink, like so many lately, has been sourced from Anders Erickson’s YouTube channel. You can learn more about the drink and its recent creation in Chicago in the link below.

Personally, I’m more of a fruity drink guy where as this one definitely speaks more to those who eat their veggies. Fresh mint, lemon juice and cucumber are definitely reflected in this cocktail. But the Gin, in the form of Beefeater London Dry Gin, brings juniper to your tastebuds as well. As if that wasn’t enough then rose water really makes this one of the most botanical drinks made in the Tavern thus far.

While we were able to use fresh ingredients, I wasn’t to get frothy layer on top after double-straining and pour. My bitters were not angostura so the drops were clear rather than brownish-red. Presentation wasn’t spot on but the spirit of the drink was definitely captured here.

As this drink is shaken in mixing tins then you can expect its unique flavor to be consistent from start to finish. If you love cucumber martinis, mojitos or some of the other summer cocktails then definitely try The Juliet and Romeo!

What’s in your glass tonight?

For me, it’s an old fashioned. 2oz of Makers, 1/4iz of sweet Demerara Simple syrup, a couple of dashes of bitters stirred with a couple of wedges of orange and poured over an ice cube. It’s amazing!

Recipe sourced from Anders Erickson on YouTube.
