Around the farm Today
Sheep are Gods lesson plan I think...We moved two wethers to the triangle with two finishing steers. Plenty of feed and unlimited hay. At the gate of this small pasture is a side panel because we load out of here. Those two yearling lambs have stood in that open ended area for 2 1/2 days....steers are walking in and out yet there they are starving and confined with a 20 foot opening to a kings table. Even this morning while the steers are eating the bounty of a 5 gallon bucket they run through and over Ben and I as we urge them out...Seeing they are suddenly on green grass they frantically grab a few bites still seeking to run to where they came. When they grasp the steers were eating grain they snatched bits but as soon as we exited back to "safety" and starvation they ran.... standing at the gate....
Spring is coming Time for a REMINDER about those bottle boys...cows, sheep and goats....this is why my guys stay with mom the first few days if they are going to leave as bottle babies. I want them to Know what they are

Flat sour is an unappealing off-flavour that canned goods, home or commercial, can develop. It’s caused by keeping jars of just-processed food warm too long after processing, either by keeping them in the canner, or by covering them with a towel, etc. There are thus two extremes to avoid with cool...
This may be a sensitive subject to some of you But we raise ALL of our meat on the farm...the goal is to have enough to feed us and I hope a few more folks as we expand onto our new acreage....I think...I hope ... I have feeding these little kunekune hogs down! Its a struggle to find the balance of feeding them enough for steady growth and not to much so they dont just get fat. A friend had an opening for two hogs last month she was not going to use so I sent a fat young gilt I did not raise and a yearling hog that I did raise. The yearling was 175 lbs live weight. Hanging was 94 lbs....fat...less than 12 lbs. And thats from a lard pig!! HAPPY DANCE!!. He yielded over 50 lbs of amazing sausage.
The fat from the gilt was over 125lb!! ....not only does that raise the cost of processing but it kept her from being able to reproduce. There was no hope of ever changing her diet enough to lose that much internal fat and she had a 4 inch fat cap! She literally would have starved to death and never lost the fat. I ended up with Less meat from a live weight of just over 400 lbs than from a hog half her size.
What I know- Kunekunes are not confinement pigs...they need a pasture, grass and hay and they Love alfalfa. About 2 to 4 cups of a good non gmo high quality feed once a day if you have good pasture. I also feed veggie scraps as I have them. Milk and eggs once or twice a week.
They are a kind easy to live with hog. Correct feeding is so very important for their health and for the meat you put on the table. I have been able to keep my breeding trio longer also from managing their weight better.
ON the plus side! I have been processing lard for cooking for the last two days! I should have enough to more than last me for a year until the next hogs can get to the butcher
Last of the Garden Peppers...5 gallon bucket of bells! Love the NO TILL Regenerative Gardening! We have had a Bumper crop of Everything this year! So thankful!
Welcome to the mini herd our Hereford heifer! about 40 inches tall she will be bred to our 36 inch belted bull for hopefully some nice panda calves! Moolissa has arrived!

Mini bull Lukes 3rd bull calf! Handsome fella! will be about 38 inches tall ..Luke is really producing some very nice beefy calves in small packages!
Watch us grow! doubling the size of pasture is in process!
No till, no pesticides no artificial fertilizers...healthy plants dont attract pest
My Garden Guinea hatched 6 keets this morning....these 3 hens have all adopted them and will Take your Face off if you get near..
Humidity was to much for my large cloves of garlic- they were ruining in the center...broke them open and hardened them off then peeled, chopped and dehydrated for my own garlic powder.
