This genetic mutation is called fasciation, and it’s absolutely ✨fascinating✨

It’s a rare genetic mutation that causes a disruption in the meristem cells of the plant, which results in the production of elongated and flattened cells. These cells form a flat, wide, and often times wavy stem that looks like a ribbon, and the colas become conjoined, twisted, and very “trippy” looking 😵‍💫🍃

It mostly only occurs on a single branch, and produces some crazy looking colas with double, triple, or even quadruple the amount of leaves.

While prized in decorative flowers and other gardening, it isn’t great for c*nnabis growing and consumption. As cool as it looks, the bud has dense, thick core and not much actual “flower” to be had. The thickness also leaves more room for mold growth, and can make the plant more susceptible to disease.

On the rare occasion we find these branches in the field, we “ooh” and “aah”, take our pictures, and then cut the branch off of the plant for compost.

The next time you’re in your field, greenhouse, garden, or meadow, keep an eye out for fasciated plants!

Meet the Crew Monday!

This week we’re highlighting Gilbert, AKA Doctor Gil 🩺🍃

Gilbert started working at SHO almost exactly a year ago, and became an important and valuable part of our crew almost instantly. Gilbert is an incredibly hard worker with a passion for the plant in all of it’s stages. He’s a pro at making prerolls and pressing hash, along with being proficient at everything else that we do here. He’s always coming up with great ideas for streamlining all of our processes, and keeps us laughing along the way. From w**d whacking and putting in posts in the field to in-house product photography, Gilbert is a jack-of-all-trades who truly does it all.

Outside of the farm, Gilbert enjoys the outdoors, whether it’s camping, hiking, gardening, or fishing (especially ice fishing). He loves cooking on the grill for his family- the ultimate dad trait.
Inspired by the musicality of the farm, he also has started learning harmonica and the ukulele (and he’s a natural!)

We truly are so lucky and grateful to have someone as skilled, hardworking, and dedicated as Gilbert. He keeps our workplace fun while keeping us all moving quickly and efficiently.
