It’s all starting to come together, and we might even sneak in a little soft opening this weekend. Stay tuned.

I’ve spent most of my career doing user experience research for software products, so of course I turned choosing chocolate for my cookies into a neighborhood research study.

I’m working on a brown butter sourdough chocolate chunk cookie for the farm stand and couldn’t decide between dark and semisweet chocolate. I made both, labeled them A and B, and dropped pairs off with a few neighbors without telling them which was which. A was dark chocolate, but they didn’t know that. I asked Instagram to weigh in, too.

Semisweet won 8 to 7. Barely.

My son had the strongest feedback: He didn’t want salt on either one and thought they should both have milk chocolate. Noted.

Since being laid off from my full-time role, I’ve been spending more time working with my hands, being in the garden, and baking. Putting the things I make out into the world still feels a little daunting, but then people send me photos of their families eating them.

The farm stand is almost finished! Stay tuned for our first opening date and preorder details.

Testing brown butter sourdough chocolate chunk cookies for the farm stand, which means a few lucky neighbors are on taste-testing duty. Lucky dogs.

Now for the very serious question: dark chocolate or semisweet? I genuinely can’t decide.

Which would you want to find at the farm stand?

Something new is growing at Monke Micro Farms.

What started with growing microgreens for our neighbors is becoming a little neighborhood farm stand in our front garden.

We’re turning an old Hoosier cabinet into a home for fresh microgreens, organic sourdough, cookies, seasonal treats, and eventually a few things from other local makers.

It’s still very much a work in progress, but after lots of measuring, painting, lumber hauling, and family help, it’s starting to feel real.

I’ll share more as we build it. What would you be most excited to find at a neighborhood farm stand?

People often ask how to eat microgreens. The simplest answer? Add them to almost anything.

Microgreens are simply a more concentrated version of their full-grown vegetable. These arugula microgreens liven up this lunch with a fresh, peppery bite.

Farm chores this morning. After germinating, these trays spent three days stacked to encourage even growth and strong roots. Today is their first day in the light and their first watering since coming out of the stack.

They’ll be harvested on February 4 and delivered on February 5 in Arvada and Golden. If you’d like to be added to the waitlist, just send us a message.

With such a mild winter, we decided to try a small experiment in our home garden. We built a simple hoop house over one of our raised beds and started lettuce a few different ways. Some seeds were started indoors, some were direct sown, and a few plants were transplanted from an uncovered bed where they had already survived part of the winter.

Once everything was in place, we mulched the bed with shredded leaves from our yard to help insulate the soil and hold moisture. We’ve been watering about once a week and letting the season do the rest. Now we’ll see how it goes.
