May is Stroke Awareness Month, and it holds special meaning for us here at White Squirrel Kitchens. In September 2022, I survived a stroke and in a roundabout way, it's the reason WSK exists. It was my occupational therapist who suggested I find a hobby to occupy my mind and rebuild dexterity, so I started making cheese.

Recovery has taken years. I've been fortunate to have a supportive partner, good aftercare, and a network of loved ones. Though you may not see it, I still feel the effects every day.

Every stroke journey is different. One resource I wish had existed when I was diagnosed is Stronger Together Wellness - a nonprofit offering peer mentorship, support for survivors and caregivers, and help navigating services. Their work is truly remarkable.

In honor of Stroke Awareness Month, WSK is donating 10% of all direct online and in-person sales in May to Stronger Together Wellness. Come see us at the River Arts District Farmers Market and the North Asheville Tailgate Market and help us support their important work.
