As planned, we sent our wethers down the road, to fulfill their purpose, as good food for our family. We perceive their absence, observe a hint of melancholy, and thankfulness for the blessing that they took part in. Respectfully, this is the homesteading lifestyle that we live, and work hard for. I really enjoy working with lambs; I do make memories with them, remember individuals, and miss them when they have to go. It's our reminder: Come time (every year), this is a reality of self-reliance. It is applicable to all of our livestock here.

In the same week, a splendid opportunity presented itself. The good lady we got this year's stock from, was down-sizing in the sheep business, and we invested into two more of her ewes. We anticipate breeding this Fall for meat stock, and we are also looking to incorporate two dairy ewes into our flock as well. We are proceeding into new territory, and are achieving our objectives very quickly.

Yesterday, was the beginning of a new chapter, and will improve our current level of experience.

We are catching feral kittens this morning. It's time to tame them down, and help them learn to trust people. We are getting to this batch a little late, and they will probably do best as barn cats later on. We have some super friendlies too, that should be ready to go soon. Every cat deserves a loving, secure home. We have captured, spayed/neutered 6 adults, and rehomed several kittens this year. Be on the look out for kitten posts!

Tell me it's your first time shearing sheep, without telling me. A follow-up of learning to shear...about 2 months later, is still visible in their coats. Whoops! All my bad 🤦‍♀️😆. Those poor lambs must have been embarrassed of my green skilled work, earlier on. They're like, "Yeah lady, ya screwed it up baaad!" I'm not going to pay $20 a head, just so that you can look pretty while you cool off, lol.

Bees!!! Honeybees are always a blessing to have around here. We lost our last year's hive, but were pleasantly surprised with a colony that moved into the old box, entirely on their own, this summer. After cleaning out the previous dead colony, I left the boxes out of storage, anticipating to get rid of the old comb, set new frame foundations, and tourch the boxes. But after sitting for too long outside, they (the bees) found it, and made themselves right at home. I'm very happy they got to it first, before the yellow jackets or mice. Thanks Joseph, for helping me set them up better. They're doing great! Seems my boxes need a paint touch-up 🫣.

Same face, eighteen days later. They're definitely looking like bunnies now! In just two weeks, the little ones go through so much change.

Did You Know?

1. Baby rabbits (kits) are born blind, hairless, and fully dependant on mom for the first few weeks of life. Unlike baby hares (called leverets), that are born fully furred, eyes open, are fully mobile, and only somewhat dependent on mom.

2. Kits double their birth weight in just 5 days. And triple their birth weight by the next week.

3. Kits begin to grow their first fur coats around day 7.

4. Kits open there eyes for the first time around day 10, and their ears open up between days 10 - 12.

🐇In the rabbit department...🐇

We had wonderful success with our latest bred does, in these last couple days. Two litters of purebred New Zealands, and our very first litter of purebred Californians. 🥰 Now we are just waiting on the Satins. It's gonna be a full house!
