Though we are not open, we support what the is doing to help other breweries. These changes proposed would have helped Second Self stay alive.

The craft brewing industry has seen significant growth over the past several years, thanks in part to some smart policy changes by lawmakers at the state Capitol (SB 85 in 2017).

Unfortunately, Georgia still remains one of the most restrictive states to open and operate a small brewery. With the challenges of rising costs of goods, materials, and services, supply chain challenges, market shifts and other economic pressures over the past few years, small breweries lack the flexibility they need to thrive, and in some cases, survive.

The F.O.A.M. Act (Fair and Open Access to Market) is essential for a small brewery to meet consumer and community demand for their products. A bill introduced in 2023 would address these issues. It would:

✔️ Allow for limited self distribution for small brewers - allowing breweries to sell their beer to retailers
✔️ Reform beer franchise laws in Georgia - allowing breweries to change distributors if/when they want to
✔️ Remove the daily to-go limit of 288 oz. (2 cases) per person - so consumers can buy direct as much as they like
✔️ Allow for direct charitable contributions of beer - currently donations have to go through distributors, they take the right off, and charge us back for the donation.

Tomorrow (Thursday 10/19), 9 years and 1 day after we served our first keg at the pub, we're serving our last keg at ! They are raising a glass to three breweries who have had enormous impact on beer in Georgia, the US and beyond: , and the inimitable .
Beginning at 6 PM, we'll be tapping the final (for now) kegs from each of these breweries.
Both Orpheus and Second Self helped elevate and grow the beer scene in Georgia when they opened in the early 2010's, and the folks behind these breweries have become some of our favorite humans in our GA beer community. Likewise, without Fritz Maytag and Anchor Brewing, beer in the United States would look, taste and smell dramatically different. Though these breweries have each ceased brewing operations, we're honored to celebrate them tomorrow night over a glass of their finest and most iconic offerings. Who knows, with a little bit of luck we may be toasting their evolution or rebirth in the very near future....
