Today we had the privilege of hosting the Haralson County 4-H group here at Luttrell Farm, and it was one of those days that reminds me exactly why we do what we do.
The kids spent the day learning, exploring, creating, and making memories. We started with a farm tour, then dove into hands-on activities where they made their own goat milk soap, became Junior Egg Detectives while learning about eggs and chicks, and mixed and created their own hypertufa garden pots to take home.
One of the highlights of the day was a visit from MyReptileGuys where the kids got up close and personal with snakes and other reptiles, learning about these often misunderstood animals and even getting the chance to handle them.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a farm day without a little fun and friendly competition! The fishing tournament kept everyone busy throughout the day, with a trophy awarded for the biggest catch. We also spent time swimming, cooling off from the summer heat, and wrapped up the afternoon with plenty of fun playing Gellyball Adventures.
There were muddy hands, wet clothes, fish stories, lots of questions, plenty of laughter, and more than a few kids stepping outside their comfort zones to try something new.
None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers. Thank you to everyone who gave their time, shared their knowledge, helped with setup and cleanup, taught classes, supervised activities, and invested in these young people. The kids may not remember every fact they learned today, but they will remember the experiences, the encouragement, and the people who took the time to teach them.
And to the students - thank you for your curiosity, enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and willingness to jump in and try new things. You made the day special.
I’m exhausted, a little sunburned, and definitely ready for a shower, but my heart is full. Days like today remind me how important it is to connect kids with agriculture, nature, hands-on learning, and simply being outside.
