You all know we adore our pigs! There’s just something about the way they look at you that melts us.
This yr we chose to do fewer pigs (thankfully). Cody had a job change that has been nothing but a blessing but was traveling out of state for work all spring, leaving me to man the homestead alone during one of the busiest seasons. Thankfully I have the most amazing children, and they helped me so much, we pulled through just fine. But also we had a very strange thing happen with one piglet, and she passed. It was so sad and unexpected. So this yr we raised only 2 hogs, and they’ve been so sweet and kind! The yr flew by, what with the crazy spring and tragic summer we have had, and these 2 are huge!
Here is a pic of each of them getting spoiled a few wks ago. We love being in their pen with them. They’re large, but basically they’re just puppies lol 😂

This year I’ve been blessed with many peppers 🫑

Don’t let the pretty pictures fool you. There is grass everywhere in this garden!
My momma making a turn for the worse in mid-July and passing mid August took up my entire mental space. In all honesty, mentally I haven’t been the best in a few yrs (when she was first diagnosed). I didn’t realize how much I was truly affected by it all until after she passed and I took a walk around my garden (a wonderful place for me to go to feel peace). But! I’ve still been able to take on the many blessings of the harvest, and my husband and children have stood by me and helped so much along the way! (And some understanding friends, my sissy, and my daddy!)
I’m trying to get back to my love of it all…to find that joy again. It will come! I will welcome this next season of rest 😌

What do yall like doing most with your jalapeños?
I make cowboy candy (encouraged by a friend on here to try). I can almost all of them this way. We use it on burgers, tacos, pizza. So yummy!
Once I have quite a few jars worth, I will chop and freeze for jalapeño poppers!

As a homestead, one of our goals is to feed ourselves as much as we can from our own land. And what we can’t provide, we usually find local friends or businesses to help supplement. We are so blessed with a neighbor that has mature fruit trees while ours are still growing. I try to get creative so we have variety. One of my favorite things to have in the pantry is Pear Vanilla Jam. It is like a healthy dessert for me. I can’t wait to stock the pantry with some again!
