Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bradford FFA and the Cavaness family during this difficult time. Rest easy, John Robert.

This is a hard post for us to make. It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of Sophomore FFA member John Cavaness. If you knew John, which most people did, he was a student who would help anyone in need. I’ve never heard of anyone having anything but great things to say about him. Three concepts come to mind when I think of John: Work ethic, family values, and reliability.

John was one of the hardest working kids I have known for a while. Back at South Fulton, I had a student named Chad Robertson who would always find a way to work, and figure out a way to make money from it. John was a lot like Chad. No work, both large or small, was too good for him. He hated not being able to work. Over the summer, John was heavily dedicated to multiple SAEs in his FFA program by working with his Dad, but mainly working for his Grandfather. He got a lot of his work ethic from his family. Some kids just want to hang out and have fun, John enjoyed the toil of work, it seemed to come so easy to him. I would always be able to count on him for a job that others might not be interested in.

John loved his family. It was more than just what he said about his Mom, Dad, Grandparents, it was also how he acted around them. Every time he saw his brother Jacob, he would stop what he would be doing, just to go over there and talk to Jacob . You could tell he looked up to Jacob. Whenever he saw his Dad, Mr. Craig Cavaness, he would light up and they would joke around together. They would always cut up and laugh, but you could tell that John greatly respected his Dad. He always wanted to be around his Dad. For example, John’s Dad was cutting logs at our Sale Barn, and I was going to meet him to talk during lunch. John begged and begged for me to take him during lunch, just so he could see his Dad for a little while. (Don’t tell but I took him with me to see his Dad). If I had a son, I would hope that it would be like the bond that they had.

John was one of the most reliable students in the Sophomore class to the program. He attended State Convention last year, he went to multiple meetings and FFA events, and would help with work anytime he had for the program. I actually pulled him aside and told him how much of an impact he would have on the program if he ran for a Chapter Officer at Bradford. He stepped out of his comfort zone and was the last person to sign up and get an Officer Application to run. He said he wanted to run as the Chapter Historian, because he was excited to learn about his Grandfather, Billy Hanks, obtaining his State (Farmers) Degree and he wanted to get more information about our history. He even attended the workshop held by past State Officer Nick Carpenter.

John, you will be missed by all of your FFA Chapter, school teachers, and Bradford students. You always were kind, considerate, and mannerly with anyone you came across. Thank you for being a friend to so many of us, and being a great example of what leadership out of the spotlight looks like. I will miss your personality, thoughtfulness, and humor. To John’s family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for sharing him with us. To his classmates, you are not alone. Our faculty, including me, are just a phone call, text, or door away. Rest easy John.

Wednesday was farmer day and the corn on the cob eating contest! On Thursday, our advisor and 4 of our officers began their day very early! They left the school at 4:00 a.m. to embark on a journey to the Capitol. These students enjoyed the legislative breakfast and getting to meet with the governor, senators, and representatives thoroughly!

More pictures to come! They had a fantastic day!

This week is one of our absolute favorite weeks of the year. We have so many fun activities planned. We have dress up days, contests, kiss the pig, teacher appreciation breakfast, state legislative breakfast, and we’re showing appreciation to our local first responders and fire departments by showing a movie on grain bin safety. We couldn’t do this without the help of many local businesses.

We are so excited for this busy week!

We’re so sorry about our inactivity lately, as we’ve been super busy with some new projects. We have started the process of clearing the land for our new barn and the greenhouse plants have been started for our spring plant sale. We can’t wait for you to see what all is in store.

Today, state Secretary Emily Nave visited our Ag classes. They had a fantastic time with her presentation. Pictured here is Emily and our chapter President, Haley Stout.

Last week, three of our officers got the opportunity to go to both the elementary school and primary school to talk to students about EPSO week. We were able to talk about the FFA and all of the Early Post Secondary Opportunities they will have. We were also able to give away prizes and do trivia. We can not wait to do this again!

It is with saddened hearts that we announce that our beloved agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, Mr. Blake Kee, will not be returning to West Carroll this August.

Mr. Kee has fostered the agriculture program for six years and has helped produce many outstanding leaders and citizens in our community through agriculture classes, FFA, and as a football coach for the West Carroll Junior High football team for a number of those years. His love for the West Carroll community and students was second to none, and he wants to make known that his decision to leave was one of the hardest of his lifetime.

Mr. Kee will begin this new chapter of his career as agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Clarksburg High School. While it breaks our hearts to see you go, the West Carroll FFA chapter and the West Carroll community wish you the biggest of blessings and the best of luck in the future of your professional career.

Congratulations to Shooter Nelson and Seth Ricketts on winning the TN Bass Nation Jr. High State Championship. Their final 5 fish weighed in at 12.75 lbs with their largest weighing 4.13 lbs. This win qualifies these anglers to participate in the Bass Nation National tournament to be held on 1000 Acre Recreational Lake in August. Great job by both of these young men.
