Hard Freeze Preparations

As temperatures will soon dip below freezing, prepare now to save money and your patience. Aurora Water reminds customers to prepare their hoses, pipes and irrigation systems for the winter season.

Our customers are important to us. Here are steps customers should do prior to the first freeze.

Put away hoses — Detach hoses from outdoor faucets. Ensure hoses are drained of water. Coil them and store in your garage or shed.

Cover outdoor faucets — Tightly close any outdoor faucets you have. Then secure a foam faucet cover over the faucet to insulate it during winter.

Insulate above-ground pipes — Wrap your sprinkler system’s main shut-off valve with insulation. If there are any pipes above ground, wrap them in insulating tape.

Turn off timers — Programming sprinklers to turn on during the week is great in spring and summer, but in cold weather, it’s a disaster.

Repairs can be costly! Act now to prevent damage and unnecessary expenses.,

Water-wise landscapes aren’t merely rock and cactus; our garden has an affectionately display called “Cactus and Friends.” This photo demonstrates how cacti can add outstanding elements to a water-wise design. The juxtaposition between the round shapes of the cactus and the linear shapes of the banana yucca interests the eye. Spikes of the cactus and the lines created by the yucca’s foliage echo one another. The background foliage lends softness to the hard lines formed in the space.

The blue grama display of the Aurora Water-wise Garden is always a stunner this time of year. The contrast of the dwarf lilac foliage, which turns from green to wine, sets off the view. The variegated maiden grass brings a springtime green to the scene. It is easy to see why Albert Camus said, ‘Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower,’ when you spend a fall day at the Aurora Water-wise Garden.

Autumn is grass season! A favorite grass is Muhly ‘Undaunted,’ a Plant select grass. The fine texture and dusty rose of the inflorescence are a fun contrast to many of the gold grasses we see this time of year. The Aurora Water-wise Garden’s specimens are displayed with a similar colored Agastache, as seen here. Still, we think contrasting it with a shrub artemisia like ‘Valerie Finnis’ would be equally captivating. What would you pair with your landscape design?

Autumn Sapphire sage is about to burst open for the autumn. Right in time for Sept. 22, the autumnal equinox, marking the official first day of Fall. Autumn Sapphire sage will stun the garden with cobalt blue flowers-- an excellent late-season forage for bees who need fresh pollen and nectar when other flowers are fading. Come check out this stunning favorite while you stroll the Aurora Water-wise Garden.

Flushing your water heater reduces mineral buildup on faucet fixtures, reduces bacteria, heats water faster, extends the life of your appliance and saves money on utility bills. We recommend flushing twice per year, and fall is a great time to do it. If you have an older tank and have difficulty opening the drain valve, or if you're uncomfortable with this procedure, which can involve extinguishing or relighting your gas flame, a licensed plumber can perform the work for you.
