More than 160 years ago, the mill ran through its first flour.

In September 1863, the first flour was produced on our property at the first mill built here known as Mower County Mills. Historical accounts described it as “first class flour,” made using a run of buhrs and other milling machinery.

That original mill was short-lived, but milling at this site continued.

In 1867, English-born Jonathan Gregson and his brother Matthew built what became the Red Cedar Mills. The dam was constructed using logs floated down Turtle Creek from Moscow, northwest of Austin, and rock quarried near the mill site.

And people traveled a remarkable distance to get here. Farmers reportedly came by ox team from as far away as Fairmont—nearly 80 miles—to have their wheat ground at the mill.

The historic photo we’re sharing is of the later Red Cedar Mills and dam—a glimpse of a place that once served farmers and families from miles around.

More than 160 years later, it’s pretty incredible to imagine just how much activity once took place along this stretch of the Cedar River. ❤️

Another pantry staple we no longer buy because it’s how ridiculously easy to make at home… BROWN SUGAR.

It’s literally just 2 ingredients:
🤍 White sugar
🤎 Molasses

That’s it!

For every 1 cup of white sugar, add about 1 tablespoon of molasses for light brown sugar. Mix until the molasses is completely worked into the sugar and you have that soft, fluffy brown sugar we all know and love.

Want dark brown sugar? Just add a little more molasses!

This is one of those tiny swaps that makes a homemade pantry feel so much more doable. I don’t need to keep another bag of sugar stocked when I already have everything I need to make it in a couple of minutes.

The more I make from scratch, the more I realize how many things we automatically grab at the grocery store are actually SO simple to make at home.

One less thing to buy.
Two simple ingredients.
And another pantry staple made right here at home. 🤎

What grocery-store staple should I make from scratch next?

The sky was really showing its colors this past weekend, and so were the garden goods! The garden is just about ready to wrap up for the season but the pumpkins are crawling everywhere!
I feel so grateful for this years harvest and all the produce we were able to grow, share and preserve for the winter.
Soon we will be planting garlic for next year and turning the beds for winter.

🥜 Homemade Peanut Butter

One of my favorite parts of working toward a more homemade, less-processed pantry is realizing just how SIMPLE some of our everyday staples can be.

Peanut butter is one of the easiest swaps.

Just 2 ingredients + about 5 minutes and we can stock the fridge for months:

🥜 Organic roasted peanuts
🧂 Sea salt

That’s it.

Add the peanuts to a blender or food processor and blend until they release their oils and turn smooth and creamy. Add sea salt to taste, give it another quick mix, then pour into jars.

And the best part? You decide the texture. Keep blending for extra creamy peanut butter, or leave a little texture if chunky is more your style.

It keeps for a few weeks at room temperature or a few months stored in the fridge, making it such an easy pantry staple to make ahead.

Homesteading doesn’t always have to mean doing something huge. Sometimes it’s simply looking at the things we buy over and over again and asking, “Could I make this myself?”

One more grocery-store staple we don’t have to buy. 🤎

Save this one for your next pantry restock!

Which one are you trying first?!

✨ One less thing I need to buy at the grocery store… and it only takes 5 minutes to make. 🥜

Homemade peanut butter might be one of the EASIEST pantry swaps we’ve made.

Just 2 ingredients:
🥜 Organic roasted peanuts
🧂 Sea salt

Blend the peanuts until smooth and creamy, add sea salt to taste, and pour into jars. That’s it!

You can make it as creamy or chunky as you like, and one quick batch can keep you stocked for weeks at room temperature or a few months in the fridge.

I love swaps like this because building a more homemade pantry doesn’t have to happen overnight. Start with one thing you regularly buy, learn to make it yourself, and slowly those little changes start adding up. 🤎

Simple ingredients. Five minutes. One more staple made at home.

Would you make your own peanut butter?
