One of the most common questions new parents ask: “How long should my baby nurse on each side?

The answer? Follow your baby, and not the clock ⏰
Offer the first breast and let your baby nurse until they show signs they’re finished:

✨ Sucking slows down
✨ Swallowing decreases
✨ Baby relaxes or comes off the breast
✨ Hands and body become more relaxed

Then offer the second breast if your baby is interested. Some babies take both sides at every feeding, while others are satisfied with one side. Both can be normal! Remember that your baby’s healthcare provider may have given you a different feeding plan - that’s the one you should follow!

A few things to remember:
🐘The first side is where Baby spends the most time and does the most stimulation
🐘Every baby’s feeding pattern is different
🐘 Trust your baby’s cues. Feeding is a conversation, not a timer!

✨We are G R O W I N G✨

Looking for lactation support? We’re excited to offer visits with our IBCLC Candidate Kim Borchert, for families needing help with lower-acuity feeding concerns.

☀️ Summer with a breastfed baby looks a little different

Breastfed babies may want to nurse more often in the heat — and that’s completely normal. Human milk helps keep babies hydrated, nourished, and comforted all at once 🥰

A few summer reminders:
💧 Follow baby’s feeding cues
🧢 Keep baby cool with shade + lightweight clothing
👶 Skin-to-skin is still beneficial, just stay mindful of overheating
🌡 Watch for signs baby is getting enough milk: wet diapers, alertness, and steady feeding

And don’t forget about YOU, too:
🥤 Stay hydrated
🍉 Eat nourishing foods
😌 Rest when you can
You and your baby are learning together every day, even through the summer heat 🌻

Can you take medications while making milk? Often, yes. 💊🤱

Lactating while taking medication can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. 🤍
Many medications are compatible with lactation, and safe, evidence-based guidance can help you make informed decisions with confidence. Every family’s situation is unique, which is why personalized support matters.

If you’ve ever wondered “Can I take this while breastfeeding?”, you’re not alone. Asking questions is part of caring for both you and your baby. ✨

A postpartum lactation consultation is a thorough assessment of the milk making parent, the infant, and how they feed together. Here’s what you can expect:

📝 Health History for Parent & Baby
Before the visit, you will fill out forms about your health history, the birth, and baby’s history. At the visit, your lactation consultant may have additional questions on some of the information you’ve provided.

➿ Breast or Chest Assessment
Your IBCLC may request to look at or feel your breasts. This is a good time to point out damage to your ni***es, areas of the breast/chest discomfort, or any other areas of concern.

🤱 Feeding Evaluation
During the feeding evaluation, we will weigh your baby before and after direct breast or chest feeding to evaluate how efficiently milk is being transferred. Your IBCLC will also assist with latching and positioning.

👅 Body and Oral Assessment
Your IBCLC will assess your baby’s body for markers that may be causing issues with feeding. She will also evaluate your baby’s mouth for function, including oral restrictions. She has been trained to check for tethered oral tissues, and will discuss her findings if anything outside of normal limits is observed.

🍼 Pumping and Bottle Feeding
This is a great time to ask about pump fl**ge sizing, bottle types and ni***es, and maximizing pumping output.

👶🏻 Baby Care
Have questions about the witching hours? Can’t figure out how to rouse your sleepy baby? Your IBCLC is a bit of a “baby whisperer” and is more than happy to share all of her secrets with you.

🐥 Feeding Plan
Together, you and your IBCLC will develop a feeding plan until your next visit. Your IBCLC will write visit notes and send them to your care team, including your baby’s pediatrician.

⏩️ Follow Up
Many families need a few visits before their issues resolve. Your IBCLC will set up a follow up visit before you leave. Have questions before the next appointment? Two weeks of support by phone, messaging, and email is included.

🥰 You deserve evidence-based non-judgmental lactation and feeding support! Head to itsmorethanmilk.com to learn more.
