Not sure who had the tougher week… me or this little guy.

The main downside of running a continuous incubation model is that every once in a while you end up with a chick that’s a little… confused about who Dad/Mom is

Apparently somewhere between the incubator and the brooder box he decided my wife and I are his parents.

And I’ve only been gone a week… yet somehow the wife has already managed to spoil our first chick of the season, whether it ends up part of the breeding stock or somebody’s future dinner.

Now he refuses to stay in the brooder box and insists on riding around like he’s part of the household staff.

I’m not sure if this is good poultry management…or if we’ve accidentally started imprinting training at Fowl Play Farms.

Either way, the chick seems pretty confident he outranks me in the farm-household hierarchy. 😆

🚨 Breaking News from the Maternity Ward at Fowl Play Farms 🚨

Approximately, five minutes ago, our first clutch of the year officially began hatching.

After 40-something days of intense negotiations inside that egg, this little nugget has finally filed the paperwork for independence.

Current status:
• Wet
• Confused
• Slightly offended by gravity
• Already judging my farming skills

The incubator has been upgraded to a Level-5 NICU (Newly Introduced Chick Unit), temperature monitored more closely than the Missouri budget, and I’ve checked on it roughly 87 times in the last hour—purely for professional reasons.

Welcome to the world, kid.

You have no idea you’re about to grow into a 5–6 foot dinosaur that eats my wallet for months… right up until you reach the optimal size for us to return the favor. 😂

That moment of pure, bone-deep relief when you have to move your entire mob right in the middle of egg season… you mentally prepare yourself for the worst, assume production is toast, start doing the math on lost eggs, lost sleep, and lost sanity

…and then, somehow, because Emu are both sensative to change and indestructible at the same time, the hens shrug it off, settle in, and are back to laying in under a week like nothing ever happened.

Meanwhile, you’re over here looking like you just survived a natural disaster, negotiating with birds, apologizing to them like they’re coworkers, and questioning every life choice that led you to moving livestock during peak production.

Farm lesson of the week:

• Avoid moving big birds during egg season

• Except when you absolutely have to

• And if you do, prepare for the worst and mitigate stress like you’re running a hostage negotiation

• Be genuinely grateful when the girls decide to forgive you and start laying again anyway

Crisis averted. Eggs secured. Dad stress level reduced from DEFCON 1 to mild eye twitch.

Well… of course they did.

The emu hens finally decided now was the perfect time to start laying. Specifically, after I crossed state lines and went on vacation.

Months of waiting. Daily checks. Pleading with them nicely. Patient optimism.

And the second I leave Missouri?

BOOM. Giant green footballs start showing up like it’s no big deal.

Apparently emus prefer an audience of anyone but the owner 🤣.

🚨🐣 IT’S OSTRICH HATCHING TIME AT FOWL PLAY FARMS! 🐣🚨

We’re beyond thrilled to welcome our very first ostrich chicks into the world! 🐥🐥

These little giants are cracking their way out of some seriously tough shells, and we couldn’t be more proud. It’s been months of careful incubation, constant monitoring, and lots of love leading up to this moment.

Stay tuned—more feathery, long-legged farm members are on the way!

We will be sending off membranes of the chicks for DNA sexing this week and sending for more eggs to inncubate to expand the mob. Drop a names suggestion below for our newest hatchlings! 💬👇

Big day at Fowl Play Farms! 💪🛠️

We spent the day building a whole lot of fencing to prepare for our ever-growing mob of emus and future ostrich arrivals.

And check out this beauty we picked up—a used commercial incubator that’s ready to roll. 🔥🥚 With this beast up and running, we’ll be hatching even more ostrich and emu eggs in the months ahead.

More feathers, more fun, and a whole lot more work—but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Follow along as our big bird dreams keep growing! 🐣💥

After a short period of being the only bird on the block, Bebe finally has a mob of her own—and she’s boomin’ with excitement. 🐣🪶

For those who don’t know, Bebe lost her mate in the tornados that devastated Bakersfield and parts of Howell County. She spent nearly two months on the loose before finding her way to Fowl Play Farms. She’s been holding down the fort ever since—but it’s clear she’s missed her own kind.

Now, with a fresh mob of six (6) emu joining the farm, Bebe’s strutting like she’s hosting a feathered family reunion.

Ostriches and rheas are next on the immigration list! Expecting our first ostich chicks to hatch toward the end of June! 🤞So stay tuned for updates from the farm.

Welcome to Fowl Play Farms—where the only thing more suspicious than our bird puns is how good the meat tastes.

Out here in the Ozarks, we’re building a flock like no other—starting with emus and gradually expanding into ostriches and rheas. They might not fly, but they sure run the place. Bebe the emu has already taken charge as foreman, greeter, and feathered security chief.

This journey started close to home—three of our five kids were diagnosed with Alpha-Gal Syndrome, and we quickly realized just how limited the food options are for families like ours. We also learned how many others in the surrounding communities are navigating the same challenges. That’s why we’re committed to raising lean, Alpha-Gal-friendly red meat alternatives that taste as good as they are safe.

We’ve got big dreams, big birds, and a growing operation full of attitude (and protein).

Follow this page—and find us on your favorite social platforms—for updates, egg-spectations, and the occasional suspicious side-eye from Bebe.
