This queen has layed eggs all throughout her brood box and now is searching for a free cell to continue her job. But this frame is filled with nectar and after her hunt for clear cells is unfruitful she moves on to another frame in her hive. Adding a 2nd brood box with drawn frames will give her instant gratification offering new cells to lay her eggs and will help her build a super strong hive.

Sometimes bees fan to regulate their temperature, but when you see them around the entrance to their hive fanning with their abdomen pointing upwards it’s usually to spread their pheromones and alert other disoriented bees as to where their hive is. This happens with nucs and swarms or newly transplanted hives mainly.

These native bees are excellent pollinators to wild flowers and numerous fruit and vegetable plants. They are crucial to our food supply and should be protected- never killed. They are known to be better pollinators than the honeybee and are even commercially produced for pollination purposes. This queen Common Eastern Bumble Bee has found an empty beehive with leftover resource frames and knows she has hit the jackpot. It’s insulated and the perfect spot for her to set up camp to establish her new colony. Although she could never cohabitate with honeybees as they would see her as an intruder and would most likely ball her to death. She’s not honey producing but she’s so very important to our ecosystem. Protect native bees and understand how important they are to our world.
