We attended the Pawpaw Party at Ironweed Native Plant Nursery last weekend and got some native trees to plant on the ranch: 2 Pawpaw trees. a Serviceberry which I have wanted since I read the book The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer and two white pines.

We also got to meet Blues End Farm and try some of their local maple syrup- it was so delicious we brought a bottle home!

It was an amazing turnout and the live music really added to the event. We'll be back next year!

Welcome to High Winds Ranch and Retreat.

This page has always been a place to share life on our land — horses, gardens, chickens, and the lessons that come from caring for them day in and day out.

Over time, one theme has come up again and again: how confusing and overwhelming it can be to be new to horses.

Most of what I see beginners struggle with isn’t about doing “too little” — it’s about being given too much information, much of it disconnected from how horses actually live and thrive.

Because of that, I’m shifting the focus here for a while toward beginner horsekeeping — especially the foundations:
freedom, friends, forage, and environment.

I’m currently building an online class for new and returning horse owners who want:
• Clear, practical guidance
• A welfare-first approach
• Less fear of “doing it wrong”
• And more confidence in everyday decisions

Gardening and chickens aren’t going anywhere — they’ll have their season too.
But horses are where I’m starting, because that’s where the need feels loudest right now.

If you’re new to horses, feeling unsure, or wanting to step back from the noise and get grounded in the basics, you’re in the right place.
