Ahhhh. Working cows with family. How satisfying and fun.,....said no one ever!
For those who have worked cattle with family, you know....for those who have not, It goes something like this:
" Catch the black one!!!! No not that one! The other one!"
" Why didn't you stop them?!?! " (As 18 calves hell-bent on getting out of the alley way, headed back to their mom at weaning time, after seeing a 10 inch opening of the gate at the end of the alley way)
I joke about this subject ( not really, but it's my version of a disclaimer😉). it's a lot of work, it's hard work, usually hotter than the hubs of Hades, or so cold you wonder if you still have toes inside your winter work boots, but we love the livestock, we love each other, and forgive and forget.....until the next time we're all in the corrals working cattle....😊

You bundle up, head out to work, and pass by that farm/ranch with a herd of cattle and wonder how they manage in these brutal temps we've been experiencing. Here's some insight about cattle you may not have known.

Even though Alberta is posting temperatures colder than those found in Antarctica, it's business as usual for local cattle, who bravely stand their ground even as the rest of us retreat indoors.

Calving is getting into the last days. Lots of babies everywhere 🥰. The hills are showing a nice green tint, and so is my yard. Got it mowed today before we got a few passing showers. Farming is running full bore. Fencing, checking livestock water tanks, ( and repairing down in the pit) moving equipment, hauling seed, putting out salt tubs....busy, busy when you farm and ranch. Wouldn't have it any other way.😁

Thank goodness for sunshine. The temps still cold; was 21 below at daybreak. We should see an above zero temp today. Cold weather seems to compound everyday challenges for everyone, but when you have a herd of cattle waiting for breakfast, things like a flat tire take on a new perspective, especially when it's on the mixer wagon that feeds the calves in the bunk line and pens. I know most that read this post understand how difficult ranching can be, especially during mother nature's hissy fits. I want to say how much I appreciate our boys, including our hired man, for the hard work they do in adverse conditions. Ranching is not for the faint of heart...
