There’s a lot going on this weekend! Unfortunately, I won’t be at Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce first Third Friday of the season because I’ll be cheering on my son at a baseball game. However, be sure to check out this great event. The weather is expected to be beautiful, and there will be plenty of amazing local vendors to support.

If you're in the Kansas City area, stop by the World Cup vendor event at Union Station over the next few weeks. The Collective Heart has a booth up there, and you can pick up some of my honey along with many other unique gifts from local artisans from around the region.

Back at the apiary, the pollinator plot continues to come alive with new blooms, and after a slow start to the season, the bees are finally bringing in nectar and making honey!

Have a great weekend and support local when you can!

One of the best parts of beekeeping in Kansas is moments like this, standing next to the hives and looking out across a sea of golden wheat swaying in the breeze.

While honey bees don't pollinate wheat (it's primarily wind-pollinated), the sight is a reminder of just how important agriculture is to our state and how connected our farms, pollinators, and rural communities really are.

The even better news? After a slow and weather-challenged spring, the honey flow has finally started! The bees are bringing in nectar, supers are beginning to fill, and Buck's Honey Bee Company is looking forward to what we hope will be a productive honey season.

Here's to warm summer days, blooming flowers, and thousands of hardworking bees doing what they do best.

If you're interested in beekeeping, pollinators, honey production, or just want to spend a great day with fellow bee enthusiasts, make plans to attend the Northeast Kansas Beekeepers Association (NEKBA) FunDay this Saturday (June 6th)!

I'm excited to be one of the speakers this year and will be sharing my experiences making creamed honey. I'd love to meet fellow beekeepers, answer questions, and talk bees!

Come out, support your local beekeeping community, and enjoy a fun-filled day dedicated to honey bees and pollinators.

And don't forget, there will be honey ice cream available, making it the perfect way to cool off while talking bees. 🍦🍯

The pollinator plot at Buck’s Honey Bee Company is starting to come alive with color and activity! 🌼🐝

Some of the plants now beginning to bloom include:

• Nettle-leaved Mullein
• Moth Mullein
• Purple Coneflower
• Indian Blanket
• Foxglove Beardtongue
• Upright Prairie Coneflower
• Common Milkweed

These native and pollinator-friendly plants provide an important food source for honey bees, native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects throughout the season.

One of the best things about a pollinator plot is watching it constantly change as new blooms emerge week after week. The bees have definitely noticed the buffet is opening! 🐝🌸

Planting for pollinators not only helps support local ecosystems, but also strengthens the health of our honey bees and other vital pollinating species.

One of my favorite sounds in the spring is the hum of bees hard at work.

This morning, I walked outside and could hear these Japanese meadowsweet (Japanese Spirea) bushes buzzing before I even got close. The blooms were absolutely covered in honey bees and other pollinators taking advantage of an early morning nectar and pollen run.

Moments like this are a great reminder that pollinator-friendly landscaping does more than just look pretty; it provides an important food source for bees and native pollinators. Even small plantings can make a big difference.

The bees at Buck’s Honey Bee Company are definitely appreciating it this morning. 🐝🌸

Last week, we placed honey bee colonies on the beautiful Saltwell Farm Kitchen property as part of a shared commitment to agriculture, sustainability, and supporting local pollinators.

Honey bees play a vital role in our environment by pollinating flowering plants, fruits, vegetables, and native wildflowers. Strong pollinator populations help improve biodiversity, support healthy ecosystems, and contribute to productive farms and gardens throughout Kansas.

At the same time, Saltwell Farm Kitchen’s focus on fresh, locally inspired food and connection to the land makes this partnership a natural fit. By bringing bees directly onto the property, we’re helping strengthen the relationship between pollinators, agriculture, and the food that ends up on our tables.

We’re proud to work with businesses that value sustainability, local agriculture, and the importance of protecting pollinators for future generations. Be sure to support local and check out everything happening at Saltwell Farm Kitchen! 🐝🌻🍯

In beekeeping—just like real estate—location is everything.

The hives at my home apiary haven’t started putting much into the honey supers yet, but the colonies at the InterContinental Kansas City At The Plaza are already off to a great start.

Believe it or not, it’s not uncommon for urban hives to outperform those in the countryside. Cities often provide a more consistent forage supply with continuous blooms, landscaping, and regular watering.

I have no doubt the “country bees” will catch up, but it’s always interesting to see just how much of a difference a few miles and the surrounding forage can make. 🐝🌼

Spring is doing its thing out in our neck of the woods 🌼🐝

Our seven-acre pollinator plot is really starting to come alive, and we’re seeing some great early blooms pop, including Rose Vervain, Crimson Clover, Dutch Clover, Sainfoin, and Yellow Rocket.

These blooms aren’t just good-looking—they’re critical nectar and pollen sources that help fuel our bees and support native pollinators as the season ramps up.

Planting and maintaining pollinator habitat with the help of The Bee and Butterfly Habitat Fund is one of the best things we can do for the health of our bees, local agriculture, and the ecosystem here in Kansas.
