Took a ride up to Pennsylvania a couple weeks ago to pick up a new herd boar, and not only did I come home with an absolute unit of a boar, I also picked up this beautiful gilt. 🐖

She’s due to have her first litter at the beginning of October, and I’m excited to see what she brings to the farm.

Even better than the pigs, we got to meet some amazing people and made some new friends along the way. One of my favorite things about agriculture is the relationships you build with folks who share the same passion for livestock and farming.

Now the countdown to October begins!

Picked up a Red Wattle × Hereford cross from the processor today 🐖🥩

Needless to say, we got back some really nice pork chops and some absolutely beautiful pork belly.

Always exciting seeing how different genetics turn out once they hit the freezer — and this one definitely didn’t disappoint.

It’s still very much a work in progress and will probably continue to evolve over time, but overall I’m really pleased with how well it worked this season.

Every litter teaches us something new, and little by little the setup keeps improving.

How many babies do we think Checkers is going to have? 🐖👀

Checkers is a Duroc × Old Spot cross bred to Captain, our registered Berkshire boar.

She’s by far one of the best moms we’ve ever had on the farm and has really become the foundation of our meat herd.

It’s feeding time on the farm 🐖🌽

We’ve got all the weaned sows and gilts out in this paddock along with a couple feeders that will be making their way to Blue Ridge Meats in August.

Before long we’ll be sorting off the feeders and the gilts that just aren’t quite big enough yet, then turning Double H out and getting ready for some fall babies.

The cycle never really slows down around here.

Big moves around here today at Home Grown Farms.

We got all of the older piglets moved into the weaning lot and settled in great. Over the next couple days, some will start their next lesson in the training lot learning what electric fence is, while others will be heading off to their new homes.

Jolly did amazing and gave us 9 beautiful little Durocs 🐖❤️

This litter is a So High School × Bury My Bones × Statement cross, and I’m extremely excited to watch these babies grow.

I’m really hoping this pairing produces several phenomenal gilts that can help continue building our program for years to come.

Now the fun part begins — watching them develop.
