So last fall we got hit hard with something in one quail pen that took 4 months and 2 labs to figure out. We lost 1000+ quail. If you do not know already they are hard to raise. Bobwhite will find any way possible to kill themselves. It had us perplexed bc it was only the one pen and did not spread to the other pens close by. Finally a diagnosis, 4months later, blackhead from earthworms. We are not far from the River and when it rains we have them everywhere. This one pen is the only one that did not have a thick sand barrier. So this years pre-baby prep has been.
1. 10 wheel barrels of debris and top layer removed
2. Soil tilled up
3. Torched
4. Being disinfected with a lab suggested chemical
5. Captain Jacks (all natural organic pesticide and salt going down)
6. salt and lime
7. Shavings
8. Babies
Raising quail is not for the faint of heart
