Wasn't much interest in Auburns, but man, what an underrated color!

This one is a true breeding variety (if you have two auburns).

Bronze based (bb) with the brown gene (ee for male / e- for females).

Unfortunately, I only ended up with one. I did send some to The Hot Mess Homestead and hope they are looking as pretty as this one is!

Pen #3 will feature our Frosted Oregon Blue

They are similar to Frosted Dark Blue; however, rather than two copies of gray (cgcg) they have the white gene (c) making them bb cgc Dd Rr for the short genotype.

I do not know that I will make eggs available from Pen 3 at this time as I am trying to breed for some specific things from this one. He will be over my two chocolate fawn hens. This means they will produce:

Slate Fawn: bb cmc Dd
Rusty Slate Fawn: bb cmc Dd Rr
Rusty Fawn: bb cmc Rr
Red Slate: bb Dd
Red Bronze: bb Rr

I have more or less determined my breeding pens for the upcoming season... Barring any unfortunate incidents... Which starts with Pen #1!

Mr. Boom(bastic): The Blue-Winged Narragansett that is one of the most beautiful colors IMO. Simplistic yet stunning.

Mr. Boombastic will be over semi-penciled Tiger Narragansett hens which will produce:

1) Blue-Winged Narragansett (same as him)
2) Semi-penciled Blue-Winged Narragansett (him but with some pencil lines)
3) Tiger Blue Narragansett
4) Tiger Narragansett
5) Black-Winged Narragansett
6) Semi-Penciled Black-Winged Narragansett

I would like to Narrow some things down, but it is tricky sometimes; that said, all six varieties are beautiful birds... not that any I produce won't be, but this pen will produce some lookers for sure!

This color is called frosted dark blue 🥶

He has a way to go before reaching his final mature coloring, but it's close.

A dark gray is a variety that is essentially a royal palm that bronze based (bb) instead of black-winged bronze based (b1b1).

The genotype for dark gray is written as bb cgcg nn/n-. cg is gray and n is Narragansett.

Dark grays breed true. Frosted Dark Blue does not.

Add to a dark gray the slate gene (D - this is where the blue comes from) and the red gene (r - this is what makes it "frosted") and the genotype fo the Frosted Dark Blue is bb cgcg Dd nn/n- Rr.

There are two split (heterozygous) gene pairs here which means breeding true is not in the cards. Whenever there's one heterozygous pair, there will be three different outcomes in breeding. Two pairs and that number goes to 9!

Typically, I like to focus on true breeding colors... but with these ones, all of the outcomes are beautiful and so I will continue to work with them!
