Scoop Local Business Spotlight: MooThru

What does “cow to cone” really mean? For Moo Thru, it’s the heart of everything they do.
Started by a fourth-generation (now the 5th generation!) Fauquier County dairy farming family, Moo Thru was born out of a desire to connect people to their food—and to showcase that dairy farmers are true food producers. What began as a creative idea for a drive-thru dairy evolved into what is now one of Virginia’s sweetest destinations for handcrafted, farm-fresh ice cream.

The team behind Moo Thru didn’t have retail experience when they started, but what they did have was an unmatched dedication to quality, family, and community. They started small—just 35 gallons of ice cream on opening weekend—and quickly discovered they couldn’t make enough to keep up! Today, Moo Thru serves over 350,000 scoops a year to customers near and far.

Location matters: MooThru is housed in a charming, remodeled Sears & Roebuck kit house, right along Rt. 29 in Re*****on—just a stone’s throw from their family farm. What once was a roadside stand selling sweet corn is now home to Virginia’s #1 rated ice cream by Virginia Living Magazine.

Their success is more than delicious—it’s meaningful. Moo Thru has helped sustain their family dairy farm through challenging years, keeping both the farm and their passion alive for future generations.

Fun fact: The same cows that help create Moo Thru’s rich, creamy ice cream are part of a herd ranked #1 in Virginia—just another reason why their product stands out.

Family First: The entire family is involved, from farming to flavor creation. Even the youngest generation are already professional ice cream taste testers. It’s not just a business; it’s a legacy.

As we celebrate National Ice Cream Month, there’s no better way to join in than by visiting Moo Thru—where every scoop is farm fresh, family made, and full of Fauquier pride.

Stop by Moo Thru in Re*****on, Va and taste the difference of true “cow to cone” goodness!
