Today was rough. Actually this spring in general has been rough. A raccoon got in our grow out coop last night, took all but one lone black English Orpington - the beauties I just raved about the other day. Somehow, 5 of 7 Easter Eggers survived. We spent a lot of our day cleaning and securing the coop further. We’ve now had coyotes, foxes, and raccoons take chickens, a duck and a goose. It seems like it’s been a rough go for many others! I know we aren’t alone.

They know what time it is! They’re the lucky free ranging flock today. We rotate free ranging to keep roosters penned with their flocks. Today though, we had the Orps fenced in their yard because we’re changing out their coop, and chickens will go stand on the bare patch of dirt where the coop used to be before they go into a new coop at night.

We like getting the cockerels out of the brooder for mental stimulation and socialization. We only keep and breed good temperaments and do our best to encourage it! He’s our lone blue splash English Orpington that hatched out of 2 different batches of 13 eggs! So, we have big plans for him!
