New mulch, new nests! We have an abundance of duck eggs piling up that I need to bring to the feed store.

Exciting day! We moved a flock into their new coop we found at Sterling Shed Co! We’ve had quite a few coops, and we’re thrilled to find this one - sturdy locks, hardware cloth window screens, solid wood construction, and you can access the doors to the feed and nesting boxes from the outside. We absolutely love it! Matt is a great guy and made the process easy - we highly recommend going to talk to him about anything you need for the farm from coops to sheds to barns!

We painted the floor to be more water resistant, and added a solar door. We have this door on two other coops and have been happy with it! And of course the nosy geese had to come check it out right away 😆

Including my past self! Even the hard days - someone would pick your hard over theirs.

Yesterday was one of those days I know everyone relates to, especially on a homestead - it’s one thing after another. You get a coop cleaned and settled, and you notice a sick chicken in another. You get fence posts set in one area, find a spot to patch in another. You go to give feed and find a leaky waterer. It’s worth finding gratitude in even the hard days! What a blessing it is to have all these animals to care for, resources for fixing things, and the time and energy to get things done.

💥TEMPERAMENT. We do not breed lunatics no matter the color or confirmation. Temperament is genetic, and we love getting feedback from people about how calm/friendly our chickens are.

A handful of young cockerels were off to new coops today, but we decided to keep one back based nearly exclusively on his temperament. This guy, in a group of 8 cockerels, had a remarkably easy temperament. There was no psychotic pacing along the fencing, no pecking at our hands, no unusual resistance to being handled. We already had our boys picked out so we hadn’t really given him much thought or handling, but we realized he checks all the boxes - good color, good posture, perfect comb - so he stays! And his name is Frederick.

When they’re this young it’s hard to know what they’ll look or act like when mature, but there are clues along the way!

From the golf course to chopping wood! Had to soak up the last of the good weather before a rainy Saturday.

The two babies in the duck flock, they’re beautiful Welsh Harlequins we got from Tracy Bacott.

🪝Yesterday we found the gold phase duckling in the bushes, she’d had a fishing line and lure wrapped around her ankle 😬 fortunately we could unwrap it and she’s doing great this morning. There’s always gotta be some drama with the animals, but the ducks tend to be the lowest!
