Yesterday afternoon we got some heavy rain. I believe it was about 4" in about 90 mins. For those unfamiliar with the area, this creek runs from under the main road then merges with another small tributary on one side of the gravel road then goes to the other via a 4 ft diameter metal courigated culvert & travels through the farm & under another asphalt road to a pond that connects to Flat Creek itself. Normally the water is below the pipe by 2-3 feet. In less than 45 minutes, the water level had dropped about 12-18". Here's some of the photos my son & I took assessing the flooding. The gravel road did have 3-4" of water flowing over it as the pasture on the inlet side was flooded. While this is not catastrophic, it shows just how dangerous little creeks can be to animals & kids especially when these bigger storms roll through. The goats had all been moved out of a big pasture that runs next to the creek the night before. We designed about a 10-12ft buffer when we installed the fencing.
Goats & dogs are all good. We had additional rain during the night but it wasn't anything like we had yesterday afternoon. I'll be taking more pictures later today to see how much erosion the water caused.
I have friends who had a creek that runs through their farm flood during Helene and if we had gotten as much rain as they did, I probably would have had erosion taking down trees that line the creek. I'm grateful that they didn't have any more damage than they did. They live in the mountains in western NC.
