You are probably familiar with the American Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata), but did you know this species is hugely beneficial to wildlife? The broad pads of the American Water Lily provide a resting place for insects and amphibians. The pads also provide cover for fish and other aquatic organisms.

The large, fragrant flowers provide forage for a variety of pollinators, including beetles! And finally, the fruits and seeds of this species are eaten by waterfowl and small mammals.

Have you heard the term "hydrophobic" used when describing plants? One of our favorite aquatic plants, the American Water Lotus (Nelumbo lutea), is described as having "hydrophobic" or "superhydrophobic" leaves. This means that the leaves or pads of this plant have a waxy coating that is really good at repelling water.

When water lands on a lotus leaf, it balls up to reduce the amount of contact it has with the leaf surface. This is beneficial to the plant because it keeps the leaves clean and enables more efficient photosynthesis! It also adds a very pretty silvery sheen to the leaves. The more you know!

If you're hot and thirsty, it's safe to bet that the pollinators in your yard are hot and thirsty too! With the heat wave this week, it's important to provide a clean and accessible water source. Our favorite quick hack is to add pebbles or stones to a bird bath. The stones provide a place for bees, butterflies, and other insects to perch and drink.
