Smith Meadows' Farm Store is open for business DAILY from 9AM-7PM. We ask that you shop with consideration for our family and staff. Please wear a mask while you shop in our store. We also ask that one person or group of no more than 2 or 3 people shop at a time. If you choose to walk along our farm trail, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR PETS AT HOME. We ask that all visitors on our walking trail be mindful of animal and vehicle traffic while walking on farm property.

We produce and sell cuts of Beef, Pork, Lamb, Pasture-Raised Eggs on our farm. Our kitchen has a new menu of Fresh Pasta, Soups, Stews, Sauces and Pot Pies that changes weekly. The best days to shop for our kitchen products are Friday and Saturday, as we produce these items fresh each week.

We attend six farmers market in the DC metropolitan area each weekend. Del Ray (8AM-12PM), Arlington Courthouse (8AM-1PM) and Falls Church (8AM-12PM) Farmers' Markets are on Saturday. Dupont Circle (8:30AM-1:30PM), Takoma Park (9AM-2PM)and Columbia Pike (8:30AM-11:30AM)Farmers' Markets are on Sundays. These hours are subject to change, so it's important to check individual market pages for any changes. Please refer to our website for more information on what we offer and where to buy our products.

Smith Meadows is not currently offering any pre-order reservations for any of our farmers markets. With farmers’ markets easing time restrictions, as well as our inventory returning to normal, we’ve decided to terminate pre-orders for now. Should restrictions due to the pandemic affect our customers’ access to our products, we may reinstitute pre-ordering again.

Additionally, this will free up valuable time for our market packer, allowing her to pack more conscientiously for each market.

A customer shared a recipe with me because he knows my father came from Sardinia, Gnochetti Sardi with Sausage Sauce. Nonna Gavinna is no longer here to make the gnochetti, so I used our Winter Wheat and Oat Pasta. Here is my version with Smith Meadows Hot Italian Sausage. Thank you Paul, and thank you for your story of our pasta with sausage and fresh herbs.

1 cup dried porcini mushrooms
1 1/2 boil boiling water
1 lb Hot Italian Sausage
1 cup chopped red onion
1 garlic clove chopped
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup dry vermouth
1 28 oz can of whole peeled tomatoes
1 large handful of fresh sage (mine came from )
1 cup shaved Sardinian Pecorino (if you can get it😉)
1.5 box Winter Wheat & Oat Pasta

Cover the porcini in boiling water and set aside for 10 minutes.

Cut the sausage out of its casing with kitchen scissors & break apart into a frying pan.

As that browns on medium heat, chop the onion and garlic together with an 8" knife or a mezza luna.

When the sausage is browned remove from pan and set aside. In same pan add 1/4 cup olive oil. Let it warm on medium heat. Cook onions and garlic until they are translucent and starting to get gold on the edges.

As the onion cooks, chop the porcini mushrooms into bite size pieces (reserve mushroom water). Add the porcini to the onion garlic mix in the pan. Cook together for a minute then add back the sausage

Cook another minute or two, and add the dry vermouth. (Sardinian Vernacia would be better)

After a minute add the tomatoes one at a time, crushing each with your hand. Also add all the extra juice from the tomatoes.

Blend well with wooden spoon & bring to a simmer. Cook on low 30-45 minutes uncovered. If the sauce gets too dry, add a little mushroom water, but save some water for the pasta.

In a large pot of boiling water, add two small handfuls of kosher or large grain sea salt. For 3 hungry eaters, use 1.5 (10 ounce box of Winter Wheat and Oat Pasta or Herb Papardelle). Cook for 1-2 minutes.

Drain pasta well and put it back in the pot with 1/2 cup mushroom water. Plate the pasta, place sauce on top with fresh sage and pecorino cheese.
