Flowers—finally! 💐

09/01/2026

One of my favorite harvests of the summer. 🌸

I spent so much time learning how to grow food in a small space that somewhere along the way I started dreaming about growing enough flowers to cut them freely, too.

This morning, I finally did. 💐

I picked these tomatoes before they were fully ripe—on purpose. 🍅

Once they start to blush, I often bring them inside to finish ripening, especially when storms, cracking, pests (or squirrels!) threaten the harvest.

And that last photo? Proof that what matters is on the inside. ❤️

Would you pick them now or leave them on the vine?

I waited all summer for these dahlias. 🌸

For months, they gave me enormous plants, lots of leaves…and absolutely no flowers. I was beginning to think they might never bloom.

Then late August arrived. 💗

Maybe that’s one of the things I love most about gardening—you never quite know what’s going to surprise you next.

Apparently, my garden wasn’t finished with summer yet.

Maybe we’re growing more than flowers. 🌸

A reason to slow down.
To notice.
To step outside and stay a little longer.

And maybe, without realizing it, to make ordinary days feel a little more beautiful.

That’s what I’m growing here. 💗

I don’t have a big vegetable garden. I have pots, planters, a deck — and a willingness to keep trying. 🌿

Some things flourished this summer. Some absolutely did not. But little harvests like this remind me that you don’t need acres of land to grow something beautiful, delicious and meaningful.

A little food. A lot of beauty. A slower way of living.

That’s what I’m growing here. 💚

You don’t need a huge garden to create a beautiful life. 🌿

For me, gardening has become as much about slowing down, noticing what’s around me, and finding joy in ordinary days as it is about what I actually grow.

That’s what The Blooming Deck is all about. And I’m so glad you’re here. 💚

I planted flowers because I loved how they looked. 🌸

Then I started noticing who else was enjoying them. 🐝

Bees moving through the dahlias and sunflowers. Pollinators visiting my cucumber blossoms. And suddenly, the flowers and the food didn’t feel like two separate parts of my garden anymore.

They were all connected. 🌻🥒

Maybe that’s one of my favorite things gardening has taught me: when you make room for a little more life, more life shows up.

And you don’t need a huge garden to experience it. Even a few containers can become a tiny, thriving world of their own. 💚

Maybe the secret really is simpler than we think. 🌿

Go outside. Walk somewhere beautiful. Notice what’s blooming. Let a butterfly stop you in your tracks. Grow something—and when you can, share it. ❤️

Today at Norfolk Botanical Garden was such a beautiful reminder of why I love gardens so much. And learning that their kitchen garden harvest is donated to a local food pantry made it even more special.

More beauty. More connection. More reasons to plant a better world. 🌱🦋

I started with a few pots and the simple idea that it would be nice to grow some of my own food. 🌱

I didn’t realize I was also creating a reason to spend more time outside, slow down, notice the seasons and feel a little more connected to what ends up on my table.

You don’t need acres to grow something meaningful.

Sometimes you just need one pot and a place to begin. 💚

If you could grow ONE thing at home, what would it be?
