Our Story, Part 4: The Next Adventure Begins at "Our Hub" 🛠️

We have officially arrived! After closing our 18-year chapter in Oklahoma, packing up the trailers, and making the long drive back home to Michigan, we finally have the keys to our new commercial building at 701 Maple Street in Big Rapids.

Now, the real work begins.

Right now, we are standing at the very starting line of a massive transformation. The old commercial space downstairs needs an incredible amount of love and hard work to become the vibrant, safe environment we vision for local families. We are talking big updates, a brand-new roof, fresh flooring, and a complete layout redesign.

But if our journey has taught us anything, it’s that John and I make an incredible team when it comes to building something from the ground up. John is putting his licensed builder background to work, I’m bringing my design and layout ideas, and we are ready to dive in headfirst.

We aren't just opening another standard school age childcare. We are creating Our Hub—a specialized center designed specifically for school-age kids (ages 5 to 12) to thrive.

We are combining our two greatest passions to build something truly unique for Big Rapids:
15 Years of Licensed Childcare Leadership: Bringing a high-quality, enriching academic and creative environment where school-age kids feel completely supported.
Certified Youth Fitness & Nutrition Expertise: John is bringing his certified youth exercise background directly into the center to keep kids active, healthy, and moving.

While we roll up our sleeves to transform the downstairs space, our family is fixing up and moving into the apartments right above the center, making this building a true family hub.

Our Story, Part 3: Milestones, Memory, and the Road Home 🚗

Once our daughters started growing up, the milestones hit like dominoes! First came Grace’s high school graduation, followed closely by Mercy getting married.

Right around that time, we started looking toward our future back home and bought 10 beautiful acres in Luther, Michigan. Just months after buying the property, our family faced a profound loss when my mom passed away. Then, just five months later, our family was tested again when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully, he had surgery and is doing fine now—but walking through those heartbreaks back-to-back completely shifted our perspective. It reminded us of what matters most: family. We knew we didn't want to be a long-distance drive away anymore; we needed to be right here near the people we loved.

Shortly after, Grace made the big move out to that Michigan property to start her own independent chapter. We bought a tiny house for her on those 10 acres, and soon after, she got married herself!
Meanwhile, Mercy and her husband decided to make the move back to Michigan, too. Before we knew it, our girls were grown, and we received the most beautiful news—Mercy was pregnant, and we were going to be grandparents!

With our roots calling us louder than ever, we decided to take the final leap. We sold our property in Oklahoma, officially closing that 18-year chapter, and bought our new commercial building here in Big Rapids. We packed up multiple trailers and made the long drive back home to plant our roots for good.

Every nail we drive and every wall we paint is driven by a bigger purpose: building a strong, lasting foundation for our family's future and staying closer than ever.

Our Story, Part 2: 90 Days to Rebuild & The Lessons of Change 🛠️❤️

The days following the 2019 flood were a blur, but they showed us the true power of community. Looking at the damage, it felt impossible, but our family, friends, and neighbors rallied around us. With everyone pitching in, lending muscle, and lifting our spirits, we did the unthinkable: we completely rebuilt our home and daycare space in just 90 days. We were back up and running, deeply grateful for the village that carried us through.

But just as we caught our breath, the world threw another curveball: COVID-19.

Going through a catastrophic flood and a global pandemic back-to-back was an eye-opener. It made us realize that no matter how much you love your business, life can change in an instant. We needed a backup plan—something to diversify and create a rock-solid foundation for our family’s future, no matter what came our way.

As we navigated those crazy years, time did what it always does—it flew by. Our girls, Grace and Mercy, were growing up right before our eyes, and a whole new season of life was about to begin.

Our Story, Part 1: The Beginnings & The Storm 🌊

Before we were business partners, we were high school sweethearts who hit the ground running right after graduation. By December 2002, we welcomed our eldest daughter, followed by our second in October 2004, and we focused 100% of our energy on building a strong foundation for our young family.

In 2005, John took a job in the cable industry. A few years later, in 2008, the company in Michigan bought a system in Oklahoma and wanted John to move out there to run it. So, we packed up our lives and made the move. Just one year later, we bought our first home.

By 2011, we wanted to create a life where we could be fully present for our girls. John transitioned to part-time cable work so we could open an in-home daycare together. Those years were a beautiful, busy blur—running a full childcare program, homeschooling our daughters, and managing my own crazy schedule as I went back to college for my degree!

We built a life, a business, and a community we loved in that home. But eight years after opening the daycare, everything changed.

A catastrophic flood hit our area, completely overtaking our family home. In a matter of hours, the place where we had raised our girls, hosted countless daycare children, and built our dreams was underwater. It was a heartbreaking moment that tested our resilience in ways we never expected.
We lost so much to that water, but it also sparked a brand-new direction for our family.
