We had a gentleman stop in today we’d never met. Was he a salesman? A fisherman? Lost? You never know. He was in fact a true Montana neighborhood watchman. He’d been driving by on the Interstate Monday morning and saw a large coyote in pursuit of our grassfat and replacement ewe lambs. He stopped, honked, hollered and generally did everything he could to scare the coyote off. It must have worked because I didn’t find any carcasses or lambs with torn open throats. He was respectful of property lines - this is not me telling anyone to cross into someone’s property, but a phone call or a quick stop is greatly appreciated. The wildlife are bold this year, we need all of the warnings we can get!

Serious question: are these like an albino sunflower? 🌻 the sunflowers replanted themselves the last few years, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen this color combination. 🤔

Oh my heavens - there is no end to the predicaments a sheep can find itself in. I quite literally left every gate open for them to move themselves to new pasture. Not one has moved. But if I put up an electric fence and made it a challenge I’m guessing the only one in would be the llama. On sheep. Oh, and she’s fine by the way.

My heart stopped when I saw the white in this picture. It looked like a dead lamb in the creek and we’ve had plenty of predators around to make that a reality. So relieved when I realized it was just foam…..

Only the finest fences here. My husband is typically horrified/disappointed and no longer shocked about the multitude of ways I can fence 😂. If you have sheep you know. This week’s edition included a bbq grill as a fence stabilizer 😬. It was close by and effective. The ground was too hard to push the post in, so grill for the win. He came home, shook his head and asked if I seriously tied my fence to an appliance. Yes, yes I did 😂. Of note: grill is working great for intended purpose and my sheep are staying in their designated pasture.

Lamb chop night courtesy of popped package seals! A popped seal doesn’t hurt the meat, it just means it won’t store as long in the freezer. And the package doesn’t look as good, it’s a misfit. Not a problem here because one of my kids favorite meals is lamb chops! And these loin chops and lollipop chops (grilled with just a dash of salt and pepper) did not disappoint! Fork tender, melt in your mouth, wonderful flavor, so delicious. We’ve never gotten to eat the lollipop chops because we always sell out, but they may be my new favorite. So good! If you haven’t tried lamb these chops are a winner. In fact my daughter said “mom, I love your job. Thanks for being good at it.”

Lamb, it’s what’s for dinner!

Fence line weaning the grassfed lambs and replacement ewe lambs this weekend. We’ve done this for years, the lambs are sorted off of the ewes and put on one side of a sheep impenetrable fence. The ewes (mamas) go on the other. We separated them yesterday- you can see the ewes headed out and the lambs eating, content and calm. We’ll keep them on the same fence for about 3 days and then completely separate for about 2 weeks. We only have 1 llama so figuring out safe places from coyotes in this time frame is always top priority. This year bears and lions are everywhere too so praying we pick the right spots for both groups!
