Myth or fact: Biloxi was once called the Seafood Capital of the World? 🦐

Fact. Around the turn of the twentieth century, Biloxi's oyster and shrimp canneries made it one of the busiest seafood packing towns anywhere, and promoters proudly used that title. White sailed Biloxi schooners worked the Mississippi Sound, and immigrant families from Croatia, Eastern Europe and later Vietnam built whole neighborhoods around the docks at Point Cadet.

Long before the Strip and the casinos, this was the real economy of the coast. Hard, seasonal, cash based work on the water shaped the town's character, its toughness, and the way neighbors looked out for each other when times were lean.
