The 2020 Vintage in Germany - Dönnhoff

We love this vintage report from our friend and outstanding German producer, Cornelius Donnhoff. His explanations about working the vintage during COVID is fascinating. We especially like his comments about getting local kids out in the vineyards in the spring because their normal labor was unavailable. Reminds me of some Root kids who did a lot of order picking in the Spring. Isabel Root Cornelius Dönnhoff

Cornelius Dönnhoff tells us about the 2020 vintage in Germany.

So many of our friends and colleagues have already felt the economic hit of Covid-19. Harry Root is working closely with a group of industry leaders who have formed the Independent Restaurant Coalition to fight for our local restaurants. Keep reading and please share to help us get this message to Congress!

Restaurants are the heart and soul of our communities. But If Congress doesn’t act now, many of us will close our doors forever. 7M+ have lost their jobs and millions more will too. And the economy stands to lose 4% of GDP. That’s why we need Congress to act NOW to #SaveRestaurants.

ATTN: @senatemajldr @marcorubio @SenSchumer @SenatorDurbin @SpeakerPelosi @LeaderHoyer @SenJohnThune @NydiaVelazquez! Because of coronavirus, our independent restaurants may close forever and the economy stands to lose 4% of GDP — unless you act now. saverestaurants.co

THANK YOU SENATOR JONES

Alabama State Seal Doug Jones
United States Senator from Alabama Senate Seal

Dear Mr. Thomas,

Thank you for writing to voice your concern regarding a proposal by the President’s administration to impose 100% tariffs on European wines. I appreciate you contacting me on this important issue.

I share your concern regarding this proposal and have pressed the Trump administration to back off their harmful tariff threats. On January 13, 2020, I sent a letter to United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in which I emphasized the negative impact new tariffs would have on businesses in Alabama and across our country. Know that I will discuss this issue further with my colleagues in the Senate, and I will continue advocating for trade policies that serve to benefit Alabama businesses.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. Please do not hesitate to do so again if I can ever be of assistance to you or your family.

Sincerely,

Doug Jones
United States Senator

Good sum up of where we are with EU goods tariffs: "The National Association of Wine Retailers (“NAWR”) is pleased with the temporary truce President Trump and President Macron have announced with regards to the French Digital Services Tax (“DST”). This truce temporarily halts the threat of tariffs on French Sparkling Wine which were proposed by the U.S. Trade Representative (“USTR") in response to the French DST. We must point out that the much broader danger to the U.S. Wine Industry still looms large, as the threat of 100% tariffs on all EU wine in response to the WTO Airbus decision is still very much under consideration by the USTR. Further, the current 25% tariffs on the majority of wines imported from France, Spain, Germany, and the U.K. which were imposed in October 2019 are still in place, continuing to cause harm to both American businesses and consumers. These tariffs do far more damage to U.S. businesses than those in the EU.
The U.S. wine industry is mostly made up of small, family-owned businesses that are especially exposed to the damages from these tariffs. There are roughly 400,000 U.S. employees that work for 47,000+ retailers and 6,500+ importers and wholesalers. The majority of the revenue made from the sale of wines from the EU stays with these American businesses. Data shows the damage is already taking its toll here at home. The November 2019 imports of French wine dropped by 67% compared with the year prior - results that translate into huge revenue losses for U.S. businesses, particularly small U.S. businesses. The possible increase in the scope and the level of the tariffs, announced in December by the U.S. Trade Representative, risks further damage. If the USTR follows through and imposes a 100% tariff on all EU wine, the long-term consequences for a broad range of U.S. businesses would be catastrophic.
We encourage all parties to negotiate seriously on this matter. In the event further tariffs are considered, we urge the U.S. Trade Representative to find alternatives that would not cause vast, disproportionate damage to tens of thousands of small U.S. businesses."

A Vintner’s Quest to Create a Truly American Wine

Have y'all read this facinating article in the New Yorker about Randall Grahm and Bonny Doon Vineyard? Randall Grahm is pushing the boundaries of wine world like no one else. It's a pleasure to work with these wines!

"Grahm aims to produce an entirely new, climate-adapted American varietal by crossing unlikely pairs of European grapes."

Randall Grahm’s iconoclastic obsession will involve breeding new varietals from scratch and growing them where grapes have never been grown before.
