Every few weeks we load birds for the processor. 🐓

That truck runs on diesel. So does the tractor that carries hay to the cattle, the one that cuts the hay, and every delivery route into Knoxville.

Here's the part most folks don't know: the fuel we buy for the tractors is dyed red. Same diesel, just untaxed, because it's meant for equipment that never touches a public road. Running it in a road vehicle is against the law, and they do check.

The state paused that rule through the end of this month. So for a few more weeks, the red fuel can go in the trucks too. About fifty cents a gallon.

WVLT came out to the farm yesterday and asked what that does to an operation our size. They walked the pastures and got the birds and the cattle on camera. Clip's in the comments if you want to see the place.

Short version: it helps. It doesn't fix anything. And it's gone October 31.

None of this shows up as a line on a package of chicken. All of it's in there.

Everybody's feeling this one, not just farmers. Y'all are paying it at the pump same as we are.

Diesel was $3.41 a gallon in Tennessee this time last year. ⛽

It's over six now.

New off the farm. 🍗

He picked out which ones to hold. Went with the maple patties and the brats, which tells you about everything you need to know about a two-year-old.

We've been working on these a while. Same chickens we raise out on pasture, just in a form that makes a weeknight easier.

~ Chicken Patty Sliders — 8 per pack, $13

~ Mild Sausage Chicken Patties — 8 per pack, $13
~ Chicken Bratwurst — 4 per pack, $11

The maple ones are made with real maple, not flavoring. The mild sausage patties go on a biscuit and don't last long around here. Brats go on the grill same as pork.

All of it from our own birds, raised on pasture and moved to fresh grass every day. No antibiotics, no hormones, USDA processed.

Everything that happened here this week. 🌾

Monday started at 3 a.m., loading birds for the processor.

Then temporary fence up to section off the next paddock, so the cattle move onto fresh grass. Mineral hauled out to the herd. Water carried out to the chickens, twice a day, every day.

The little man was in on most of it.

None of this shows up on a package at the store. You ought to know what went into what you're feeding your family.

He packed the first one. 🐔

Pulled out every package, told me what each one was, and put them in the box himself. Took about four times longer than it should have.

That's the Monthly Chicken Box. 8 lbs, $49, same thing every month:

Long weekend on the ridge. 🐓

Alarm went off at 3 a.m. Loaded birds in the dark, drove them to the processor, and came back to move the next batch out to fresh pasture.

That’s the cycle around here. One group finishes, the next one starts, and there’s no off week.

The little man worked hard. Held every bird he could get his hands on and told us about each one.

Folks see the finished product in the freezer. They don’t always see the 3 a.m. loading, the drive, or the hands it took to get there. We figure you ought to.

We made the news. 🐄

WATE 6 sat down with us this week, and the headline says it better than we could: “East Tennessee cattle farmer urges people to buy local as beef prices soar.”

We told them what we’ve been telling y’all. The cattle market dropped the morning that announcement came out, and for a smaller operation like ours, that hits.

But the part we’re proudest of is how the story ends:

“Your local farmers are down the road. You can come see the cows, how they’re raised, and know where your food is coming from.”

That’s the whole thing right there. Beef prices will do what they do. That gate stays open either way.

Thank you to every one of you who shared our post last week. That’s the only reason this story ever found us.
