It's been an eventful 24 hours here at the farm.....3 litters of piglets, 24 total (11, 7, and 6), and 1 more litter on the way soon!!! We were asked by Siverling Centennial Farm & Farm Market at SCF to assist with the farrowing of 4 of their momma pigs. Our boar, Luther, was very obliged to assist us in this process! There is nothing more rewarding than seeing new birth on the farm. Baby piglets sure are fun to watch!

These pretty girls are playing model for us today. A very interesting fact that farmers have used for a long time to predict fertility in cattle, is something called the Rosette theory! What is it? Well, it’s indicated by “whorls” (spiral of hair on the cows face). Whorls on a cow's face is known as part of the "rosette theory" in animal behavior and management, according to The Cattle Site. It may indicate the fertility of the cow. It's based on the observation that hair patterns develop at the same time as the nervous system in the fetus. Studies have explored the connection between hair whorl placement on the face (high, middle, or low in relation to the eyes), and temperament in cattle. High-placed whorls have been associated with more excitable and nervous behavior, according to a study by Grandin et al.
