I’ve debated myself on sharing this…
but my goal for this page has always been transparency on my real experiences with farming. My hard lessons learned could be your lessons learned prior to tragedy.
2 days ago our deeply beloved ducklings were attacked by a fox and one was dragged away. We moved them into a new enclosure for only 3 days. The enclosure wasn’t up to my highest standards for predator proofing, but I thought it was secure enough for a short time. We had plans to reinforce it further after the weekend. The 3 short days they were in there was all it took. A fox dug up underneath the fencing and took one of our ducks in the dark of night.
Who would’ve thought a couple ducks could win your heart over so strongly in such a short period of time. The bond we had with them was stronger than any bond I’ve encountered with my chickens. They were different, they were smart in their own way, and they followed us around everywhere like we were their parents.
The grief has been terrible.
We had to bring our other duckling back to the home where it came from so it could live with its siblings. A duck can have depression and starve itself from loneliness. The bond those 2 shared was unbreakable. It’s a relief to know it’s no longer alone and has a life to share with others the same age.
For now we will take a break from ducks while our hearts recover... Maybe another year we will try again. The lesson I’ve learned is to build a shelter that’s up to the HIGHEST predator proofing standards BEFORE you get an animal. I can’t stress that enough.
Anyway, farewell and rest in peace to our babies. Forever grateful for the joy you brought us for such a short time. I’m sorry we failed you. This is so hard. 😔💔
