Making wool batts is a lot of fun. I make them one four-ounce sheet at a time with a hand-crank carder. I enjoy the work and find it really rewarding. I hope you also find what you do rewarding in your own way.

Raw fleece to finished yarn. Here's how. 🐑

Every skein we make passes through five careful stages before it ever reaches your hands.

Here's what that looks like at the mill:

1. Raw fleece lock. picked by hand, checked for staple length and quality
2. Washed and dried. gently scoured at 125°F to preserve the fiber's natural character
3. Carded batt. opened and aligned for a smooth, consistent prep
4. Roving braid. drawn through the pindraft machine for even, spinnable fiber
5. Finished skein. 200 yards, wound and tagged, ready for your project

And that small bowl of short fibers in the back? That's Planter's Wool. wool too short for spinning but perfect for enriching garden soil. Nothing goes to waste here.

This is what farm-to-fiber transparency looks like up close. We think knowing where your materials come from makes the making even better. 🌿

The end of the weekend is here, and we are about to kick off another week. We will be working on some beautiful wool, making it into roving and a few shearings into wool batts. What are you working on this week?

Meet our most opinionated quality inspector. 🐑

She approved this batch of roving herself.

Every fleece that leaves our mill has passed through real hands, real care, and apparently, one very discerning nose.

That's the kind of fibre you can actually feel good about spinning.

Raw fleece becomes yarn in five steps. 🌿

Most people never see what happens between the sheep and the skein.

Each lock is sorted by hand, washed at 125°F without agitation, dried slowly, carded into roving, then spun into yarn. Nothing rushed. Nothing wasted.

Even the belly wool gets a second life as planter's wool for soil enrichment.

That's the process behind every skein we make.

What would you create with fibre you can actually trace? ✨

She inspects every batch before we do. 🦙

This is Cupcake. She has opinions about roving.

Every morning when the fiber comes off the carding table, she finds a way to lean in, nose first, like she's checking the color palette herself. Cream. Fawn. Chocolate. Gray. She approves.

Honestly, she's not wrong to be proud. This fiber started on her back.

That's the part we love most about what we do here. The whole story is visible. From the animal to your hands, nothing is hidden.

Let Cupcake's curiosity spark yours. 🌿 What will you make with fiber that has a face behind it?

Your fiber deserves better than a plastic bag. 🐑

Good storage keeps your wool soft, fresh, and ready to inspire whenever creativity strikes.

Three simple habits make all the difference:

1. Keep it DRY. Moisture is fiber's quiet enemy.
2. Store it BREATHABLE. Cotton bags let fiber rest without trapping humidity.
3. Avoid HEAT. Cool, stable spaces protect the natural lanolin and softness.

A couple of cedar blocks tucked nearby will do the rest.

Your next project starts with fiber that's been cared for. What are you storing right now? Tell us below. 🌿

Your fiber is telling you when it's ready. 🐑

Most spinning frustrations start before the wheel even moves.

Try the twist test. Draft a small section, pinch, and twist gently. If it slips apart, the staple is too short. If it grabs and clumps, it needs more prep. A smooth, even draw means it's ready to spin.

Draft first. Then twist. That simple order changes everything.

What fiber are you working with right now? Drop it in the comments. ✨
